So for our Cocktail of the Week, we&#8217;re shaking up a simple combination of Remy Martin Cognac, Cointreau, and lemon juice, it is, of course, the Sidecar!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cas Oh in his <a href=\"https:\/\/cospecs.com\/\"><em>Co Specs<\/em><\/a> cocktail book calls the Sidecar \u201cthe pre-eminent Cognac cocktail.\u201d And who are we to argue with a Fortnum &amp; Mason food and drink writing award winner? What I love about his book is it\u2019s not only a great guide to making drinks, it tells you how cocktail writers from the past make theirs, before giving his definitive take on things. It\u2019s 100 cocktail books in one, and so it\u2019s quickly proving my starting point when I\u2019m researching a drink, like the Sidecar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>The history of the Sidecar<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sidecar is thought to have been invented in 1921 so celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. It first appeared in print in 1922, mentioned in both Robert Vermiere\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cocktails: How to Mix Them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ABC of Mixing Cocktails<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry MacLehone of Harry\u2019s Bar in Paris Fame. Both attribute it to Pat McGarry at Buck\u2019s Club in London who also created the Buck\u2019s Fizz. Incidentally, Buck\u2019s was the model for Drones, Bertie Wooster\u2019s riotous club in the P.G. Wodehouse\u2019s novels. Along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/cocktail-of-the-week-the-brandy-and-soda.aspx\">Brandy &amp; Soda<\/a>, the Sidecar seems to me to be about the most Woosterish cocktail out there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"770\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LObPaCloY8E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen title=\"Jeeves &amp; Wooster &#39;Puttin&#39; on the Ritz\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d always assumed the name came from a motorbike\u2019s sidecar but according to Dale Degroff it comes from bartender slang for any leftovers from making a cocktail which might be served in a shot glass alongside the drink &#8211; a sidecar. Degroff, a legendary New York bartender, is also known as the King of Cocktails so that\u2019s someone else we\u2019re not going to argue with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Part of the Sour family<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sidecar is essentially a Brandy Sour that gets its sweetening element from triple sec orange liqueur which has to be the most misnamed liquor as it\u2019s not dry (sec) at all, it\u2019s very sweet.\u00a0 You could make it with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/liqueurs\/grand-marnier-cordon-rouge-liqueur\/\">Grand Marnier<\/a>, which is made with Cognac, for that double Cognac hit. But we\u2019re keeping things classic with Cointreau.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with many of the simplest cocktails, there\u2019s much disagreement as to the correct proportions to use. Some early recipes call for equal parts brandy, lemon juice, and Cointreau which is going to give you a very sweet n\u2019 sour experience. Harry Craddock in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Savoy Cocktail Book<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls for a 3:1:1 ratio, which is the one Oh plumps for. Whereas David Embury in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> goes for 8:2:1, the same as a Daiquiri. I\u2019m using a 3:2:1 ratio but crucially, I\u2019m not frosting the glass with sugar so even with the extra Cointreau it\u2019s not going to be too sweet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then it\u2019s just a question of which Cognac to use. Obviously, you\u2019re not going to use your finest vintage Grand Champagne but you do want quality as it&#8217;s the principal ingredient. I\u2019m a big fan of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/cognac\/remy-martin\/remy-martin-1738-accord-royal-cognac\/\">Remy Martin 1738 Accord Royal<\/a> &#8211; a rich, smooth, and full-bodied Cognac that really over-delivers for its price tag. It\u2019s a great all-rounder, complex enough to sip on its own and beefy enough to mix with lemon juice and Cointreau without getting lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Right, let&#8217;s get shaking!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-40685\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Supercro-1024x701.jpg\" alt=\"Remy Martin Sidecar\" width=\"770\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Supercro-1024x701.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Supercro-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Supercro-768x526.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><b>How to make a Sidecar<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30ml of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/cognac\/remy-martin\/remy-martin-1738-accord-royal-cognac\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">R\u00e9my Martin 1738 Accord Royal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20ml of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/liqueurs\/remy-cointreau\/cointreau-liqueur\/\">Cointreau<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10ml of fresh lemon juice<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add all the ingredients to a shaker filled with ice.
