It&#8217;s the Green Park!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Bar at the Savoy in London is definitely a contender for the most famous bar in the world and the head bartender job is one of the biggest jobs in the industry. Think of the people who have held that position. There was Ada Coleman, inventor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/cocktail-of-the-week-the-hanky-panky.aspx\">Hanky Panky<\/a>, who held the role from 1903 to 1925. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her successor was none other than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harry Craddock<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who would go on to write <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Savoy Cocktail Book<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29417\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29417\" class=\"size-large wp-image-29417\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/svy-485-american-bar-jpg-2-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"The American Bar at the Savoy\" width=\"770\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/svy-485-american-bar-jpg-2-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/svy-485-american-bar-jpg-2-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/svy-485-american-bar-jpg-2-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29417\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The American Bar at the Savoy<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><b>Big shoes<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Erik Lorincz, who was head bartender from 2010-2018, said: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce you become head bartender at the Savoy, you will always be head bartender at the Savoy.\u201d* He left to start his own bar, a Speakeasy style venue around the corner called Kwant backed by Mourad Mazouz, the man behind Sketch and Momo in Mayfair. In 2021 it was chosen as the 31st best bar in the world by 50 Greatest Bars. It\u2019s currently closed temporarily but will be relaunching in a new venue in April 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was while he was at the Savoy that Lorincz came up with his signature cocktail named after the nearby park, and of course all that green basil in the drink. Make sure you use the freshest basil you can get your hands on. The Green Park harks back to the 19th century by using Old Tom gin rather than the more normal London Dry Gin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>A real Old Tom<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Old Tom I\u2019m using is a bit special. It was created by Dane Christian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/gin\/jensens\/jensens-bermondsey-gin\/\">Jensen<\/a> who got in early in the gin boom with his eponymous gin in 2005. At the instigation of Simon Difford from Difford\u2019s Guide who clocked that it would be in-demand from bartenders looking to make authentic 19th century cocktails like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/cocktail-of-the-week-the-martinez.aspx\">Martinez<\/a>, Jensen decided to create an Old Tom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The resulting Old Tom appeared in 2008 and has become a great favourite ever since. Unlike most Old Toms, it\u2019s not a sweetened London Dry-style gin. Instead Jensen went back into the recipe books to create his. One of the things he discovered is that though Old Toms would have had much higher levels of spice and juniper, mainly to cover up the less than smooth alcohol used, they wouldn\u2019t as a rule have sugar added. This was normally done later in gin houses to cover up illicit dilution. So while Jensen\u2019s Old Tom tastes rich and sweet, it doesn\u2019t contain any sugar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Originally it was made at Thames Distillers before Jensen opened his own distillery in Bermondsey in 2012. That big whack of botanicals makes it ideal for strongly flavoured cocktails like this one. It\u2019s got the oomph to stand up to lemon juice, sugar and basil like in <\/span>Lorincz\u2019s signature cocktail.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-50835\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/GREEN-PARK-.png\" alt=\"GREEN PARK !\" width=\"598\" height=\"617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/GREEN-PARK-.png 598w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/GREEN-PARK--291x300.png 291w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/GREEN-PARK--242x250.png 242w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><strong>So without further ado, here\u2019s how to make a Green Park.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45ml <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/gin\/jensens\/jensens-bermondsey-old-tom-gin\/\">Jensen\u2019s Old Tom Gin<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30ml lemon juice<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15ml sugar syrup<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dash of egg white<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6-8 basil leaves<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blend all the ingredients with a hand blender and then shake with ice.
