Why? Allow us to explain.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you say before you have a drink? &#8216;Cheers&#8217; is a classic. But all across the world, people have different ways of toasting and wishing good health to their company. It could be &#8216;salud&#8217;, as heard in Italy or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sopranos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or &#8216;sk\u00e5l&#8217; in Scandinavian countries, or &#8216;sl\u00e0inte&#8217; in the Celtic dialect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The full term is sl\u00e0inte mhaith in Ireland or sl\u00e0inte mhath in Scotland, both of which are Gaelic and pronounced Slanj-a-va. It translates to \u2018good health\u2019 in each dialect, but in both cultures, people often shorten the toast to just sl\u00e0inte. Which is pronounced slawn-cha, like the first syllable is lawn with an s in front. The second syllable is cha, as in cha-cha-slide.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_50695\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-50695\" class=\"size-large wp-image-50695\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/whiskey-cheers-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"whiskey-cheers\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/whiskey-cheers-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/whiskey-cheers-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/whiskey-cheers-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/whiskey-cheers-375x250.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/whiskey-cheers-1050x700.jpg 1050w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/whiskey-cheers.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-50695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sl\u00e0inte!<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><b>The start of sl\u00e0inte<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to know exactly when we started using alcohol to toast to good health, but there is a belief that the Romans started it all during ceremonies or rituals to honour the gods. There\u2019s also a legend that the touching of glasses arose from concerns over poisoned drinks, so clinking the glasses in a manner that would cause each drink to spill into the other would alleviate this concern. Customs such as making eye contact while toasting or ensuring only alcohol is in your glass are also common, with some superstitions even believing that you\u2019ll suffer through seven years of bad sex if you fail to adhere to these customs. A terrible punishment for a terrible crime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, raising a glass is common practice and you\u2019ll hear sl\u00e0inte \/sl\u00e0inte mhaith in many an Irish pub. For St. Patrick\u2019s Day, there will be a lot of people saying sl\u00e0inte before they drink. If somebody does say sl\u00e0inte or the full sl\u00e0inte mhaith to you this weekend, in Irish you can respond \u201csl\u00e1inte agatsa\u201d, which translates &#8220;to your health as well&#8221;. If you\u2019re feeling more Scottish, then say \u201cdo dheagh shl\u00e0inte\u201d, (pronounced like &#8216;do slawncha\u2019) which means &#8220;your good health&#8221;, \u201cair do shl\u00e0inte\u201d, which translates to &#8220;on your health&#8221;, or even sl\u00e0inte agad-sa (both are pronounced phonetically, mercifully), which is&#8221;health at yourself!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word derives from the Old Irish \u2018sl\u00e1n\u2019, which means \u2018whole\u2019 or \u2018healthy\u2019, with the suffix \u2018tu\u2019 , which became \u2018sl\u00e1ntu\u2019 and then eventually sl\u00e1inte.\u00a0 You can trace the roots of toasts like these back to the German \u2018selig\u2019 (meaning \u2018blessed\u2019), the Latin \u2018salus\u2019, which means \u2018health\u2019, \u2018safety\u2019, or \u2018salvation\u2019 (the derivatives you can see in the Mediterranean toasts of today like salud), and the the Indo-European \u2018sl\u0101\u2019, which translates to \u2018advantageous\u2019 or \u2018luck\u2019.\u00a0 Shouting \u201cadvantageous!\u201d before a drink does sound like a lot of fun, to be honest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, you could keep things simple and just say sl\u00e0inte. That\u2019s what I do, and will be doing, this St. Patrick\u2019s Day.
