Why would you swap something that\u2019s full of flavour, gin, for something that isn\u2019t, vodka? Is it even a Martini if it doesn\u2019t contain gin?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But gradually, I&#8217;ve been moving towards vodka in my Martini. A few months ago, I began making a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/cocktail-of-the-week-the-vesper.aspx\">Vesper<\/a> in place of my usual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/cocktail-of-the-week-the-martini.aspx\">Dry Martini<\/a>. Baby steps, perhaps, but I was learning the importance of high-quality vodka in a cocktail.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>Shaken, not stirred<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then a couple of weeks ago, I was watching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Mej6c_59bho\"><em>Skyfall<\/em> <\/a>and it got to the bit where Bond has a Vodka Martini, shaken not stirred, in the casino in Macau. It looked so delicious, that I had to immediately pause the television and make one myself. I used some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/vodka\/ramsbury-estates\/ramsbury-vodka\/\">Ramsbury wheat vodka<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/vermouth\/regal-rogue\/regal-rogue-daring-dry-vermouth\/\">Regal Rogue Daring Dry vermouth<\/a>, and yes I did what all cocktail books advise against and gave it a damn good shake. Once I\u2019d got over the cloudiness from the fine ice particles, it\u2019s actually a delicious drink: very very cold from the shaking, a little more dilute than the stirred version. Perhaps Bond was on to something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it wasn\u2019t as good as a Vodka Martini I had last week at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/return-to-the-copper-rivet-distillery.aspx\">Copper Rivet Distillery in Chatham Dockyard<\/a>. I was meeting Stuart and Dan from Cask Marketing. Before eating we sat down with the distiller Abhishek Banik for a vodka tasting. For me, the two standouts were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/vodka\/copper-rivet-distillery\/copper-rivet-vela-vodka\/\">Vela from Copper Rivet<\/a>, it\u2019s spicy and creamy with a distinct banana edge, and one I&#8217;d never had before called X Muse from Scotland. It&#8217;s pronounced &#8216;tenth muse&#8217;, the name comes from the Greek poet Sappho who was dubbed the tenth muse. The packaging and the hefty price makes it look like another style over substance designer brand but it\u2019s actually a vodka for lovers of single malt whisky.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43486\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43486\" class=\"size-large wp-image-43486\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MD_Vertical_SHOT4-1024x859.jpg\" alt=\"X Muse\" width=\"770\" height=\"646\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MD_Vertical_SHOT4-1024x859.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MD_Vertical_SHOT4-300x252.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MD_Vertical_SHOT4-768x644.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-43486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This might be the best Vodka Martini we&#8217;ve ever had<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><b>New make vodka<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brand is currently working on its own distillery but at the moment X Muse is made at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.holyrooddistillery.co.uk\/\">Holyrood Distillery in Edinburgh<\/a>. It\u2019s made from two types of malted barley, Maris Otter and Plumage Archer \u2013 both of which were commonly used in whisky production but have largely been superseded by more high yielding varieties. The Holyrood team double distil it before sending it to a secret location just over the border in England for rectification to 96% ABV. It\u2019s then diluted and bottled at 40% ABV.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you\u2019d hope for a vodka made from single malt new make, it\u2019s packed full of flavour. It\u2019s full of spice, roasted coffee, chocolate, and creamy oaty notes. Imagine the essence of malted barley, and you\u2019re there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The taste is spectacularly neat but it\u2019s even better stirred down with a little vermouth in a very dry Vodka Martini. This heightened the sweet barley and chocolate side of the spirit making a truly complex cocktail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I tend to love quite wet classic Martinis, this is best served very dry to fully appreciate that creamy texture and I\u2019d recommend a subtle dry vermouth like Dolin. You don\u2019t want to complicate things. Be prepared for the best Vodka Martini you\u2019ve ever had.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>How to make a Vodka Martini<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50ml <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/vodka\/x-muse\/x-muse-vodka\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X Muse vodka<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5ml <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/vermouth\/dolin\/dolin-vermouth-de-chambery-dry-vermouth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dolin Dry vermouth<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, chill your Nick &amp; Nora or Martini glass in the freezer. Then fill a shaker or jug with lots of very cold ice. Add the vodka and vermouth and stir for a minute.
