It\u2019s called The Macallan Reach and the packaging is sure to get people talking.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it seems that not a week goes by without the Macallan team releasing some stupendously old and rare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/whisky\/\">whisky<\/a>. It\u2019s what they do. But still, this latest release dubbed the Macallan Reach is likely to get jaws dropping for many reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><b>An 81-year-old Macallan<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Firstly, it\u2019s very very old. This will be an 81-year-old single malt, distilled in 1940, just before the distillery closed down for the duration of the second world war.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondly, it is very very rare. It comes from a single sherry-seasoned cask and only 288 bottles have been filled. Naturally, the price is suitably stratospheric. RRP is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$125,000 \/ \u00a392,000 \/ \u20ac110,000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what the most striking thing about the Macallan 81 Year Old isn\u2019t the price, the age, or the rarity. It\u2019s the packaging. We\u2019re used to carved wooden boxes and hand-blown decanters but the Macallan has really gone to town\/ jumped the shark with this one.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_43131\" style=\"width: 692px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43131\" class=\"size-large wp-image-43131\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/The-Macallan-The-Reach-A-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The Macallan The Reach A\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/The-Macallan-The-Reach-A-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/The-Macallan-The-Reach-A-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/The-Macallan-The-Reach-A-768x1153.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-43131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yeah, it&#8217;s pretty terrifying<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><b>Three hands<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themacallan.com\/en\/inside-the-macallan\/our-estate\">The Macallan<\/a> Reach comes in a glass decanter, naturally, but then the decanter is held up by three hands cast in bronze by sculptor Saskia Robinson. It looks like something from a futuristic fantasy book or an object sacred to an ancient pagan cult. Reactions on Twitter included &#8220;zombie chic&#8221; and &#8220;the sort of thing the witches would give Lady Macbeth as a wedding present&#8221;.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Particularly strange is the fact that it has not two, not four, but three hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the press bumf: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each hand represents characters in The Macallan\u2019s history and their unique story. One commemorates the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themacallan.com\/en\/distillery\/about-the-distillery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Distillery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> workers of 1940 who crafted the spirit into existence, in challenging times, over eight decades ago. Another is the hand of one-time chairman, Allan Shiach, whose grandfather headed the company when this remarkable spirit was first consigned to its cask. The third is that of today\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themacallan.com\/en\/inside-the-macallan\/our-process\/macallan-whisky-mastery-team\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Whisky Maker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Kirsteen Campbell, who carefully selected the 1940 cask used to create The Reach, deciding that now was the time to share this precious whisky with the world.\u201d So there you go. It still looks really creepy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyway, we\u2019re clearly not the target market. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kirsteen Campbell, master whisky maker, continued: \u201cIt is an honour to introduce The Reach. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Created during a turbulent time in the world, this extraordinary expression showcases The Macallan\u2019s history, ingenuity, and unmistakable strength of character. The creation of many hands, The Reach has been a truly collaborative effort.
