Fancy ingredients, you won\u2019t need them. Exact measurements, throw that jigger away and just pour. It\u2019s a mixture of white wine, amaro and fizzy water. Apparently the name comes from how old Italian men would wobble home on their bicycles after a few. It\u2019s essentially a slightly less spritzy Spritz as it\u2019s made with still wine instead of Prosecco.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big question is, \u2018which bitter thing to use?\u2019 Now, most people will be reaching for the Aperol, and if that\u2019s what you like then ignore the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/09\/dining\/drinks\/aperol-spritz.html\">Aperol critics<\/a> (honestly why do people get so upset about Aperol? That\u2019s a subject for another blog post). Or for those who like it a bit bitterer, then Campari is the obvious choice. I actually like a mixture of half <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/liqueurs\/aperol\/aperol-liqueur\/\">Aperol<\/a> and half <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/bitters\/campari-bitters\/\">Campari<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a whole world of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/thats-amaro-the-best-and-bitterest-liqueurs-from-italy-and-beyond.aspx\">amari<\/a> to try but seeing as Spritzes, Biciclettas and aperitivos in general are typically Venetian, we\u2019re going with Venice\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/liqueurs\/montenegro\/aperitivo-select-liqueur\/\">Select Aperitivo<\/a>. It celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The drink was created in 1920 in the Castello district of the city at the Pilla distillery. Today, it\u2019s made with over 30 botanicals including rhubarb and juniper berries. The flavour profile is fruitier than Campari with less bitterness but without being quite as sweet and orangey as Aperol. It\u2019s custom made to do with all those little snacks that the Venetians do so well: green olives, cured anchovies, bruschetta, that sort of thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29990\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29990\" class=\"size-large wp-image-29990\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SELECT3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SELECT3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SELECT3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SELECT3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/SELECT3.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-29990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Could this be any more Venetian?<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then you have to decide what wine to use. Decisions, decisions! Well, anything goes really but you shouldn\u2019t use something too expensive or too rich; you don\u2019t want a great big oaky chardonnay in the middle of this. But at the same time, Select isn\u2019t going to cover up that bottle of wine that\u2019s been sitting on the counter for a week. A Bicicletta calls for a fairly neutral (but not completely bland) white wine of the kind that Italy does so well like Pinot Grigio, a dry Orvieto, Grillo from Sicily etc. Ros\u00e9 also works a treat, either pale pink Provence or something darker and fruitier from Spain. The final thing you could do is use a light red, Spanish Garnacha or Italian Barbera to create something like an instant Sangria. Sounds a bit mad, tastes absolutely delicious.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the perfect hot weather lazy day in the garden sort of drink. Just keep topping it up with soda water, Select, wine and ice, and it\u2019ll last all day. Just be careful on your bike on the way home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right, here\u2019s the recipe, if you need one:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50ml <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/liqueurs\/montenegro\/aperitivo-select-liqueur\/\">Select Aperitivo<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50ml white wine like this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/wine\/fattori-gregoris\/fattori-gregoris-pinot-grigio-2018-wine\/\">Pinot Grigio <\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30ml sparkling water<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fill a tumbler or wine with ice.
