It\u2019s the French Martini!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often the word French is appended to things to make them seem more sophisticated or sexy than they really are. French fries are actually Belgian, French kisses were invented in Dunstable (fact!) and have you ever seen French toast (or eggy bread as we used to call it when I was growing up) in France? Which brings us on to this week\u2019s cocktail, the French Martini. It is, like most cocktails, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an American creation. It was invented or at least popularised in New York City by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a man with possibly the least French name ever, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodandwine.com\/news\/keith-mcnally-interview\">Keith McNally<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Could it be any more &#8217;90s?<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McNally was a big noise in \u201880s and \u201890s New York (and still is). Such a big noise that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> described him as: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The Restaurateur Who Invented Downtown.\u201d Just as the French Martini isn\u2019t very French, McNally isn\u2019t American. He was born and raised in Bethnal Green. After a stint as a child actor in London, McNally came to New York in 1975 and opened a series of French-inspired restaurants such as Pastis, Cherche Midi and Augustine. His most famous venue, however, was Balthazar which became the hippest joint in town when it opened in 1997 and the French Martini was the trademark cocktail. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It quickly crossed the Atlantic and found a home among the Cool Britannia crowd at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/explore-20-years-of-the-london-cocktail-scene.aspx\">Met Bar<\/a> in London. Balthazar itself arrived in 2013 with a branch in <a href=\"https:\/\/balthazarlondon.com\/\">Covent Garden<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t get more 90s than the French Martini, or rather, could it be any more \u201890s? It\u2019s not only made with vodka but pineapple juice too. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s part of the wave of so-called Martinis that were all the range back then like the Pineapple Martini, the Appletini, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/post\/cocktail-of-the-week-the-espresso-martini.aspx\">Espresso Martini<\/a> etc. etc. The French part comes from the addition of Chambord, a French raspberry liqueur with packaging so elaborate that it looks like a medieval incense burner, or, for Monty Python fans, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xOrgLj9lOwk\">the holy hand grenade of Antioch<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_27012\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27012\" class=\"size-large wp-image-27012\" src=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Laphroaig_SmokyFrenchMartini_Styled_Web-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"770\" height=\"514\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Laphroaig_SmokyFrenchMartini_Styled_Web-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Laphroaig_SmokyFrenchMartini_Styled_Web-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Laphroaig_SmokyFrenchMartini_Styled_Web-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-27012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#8217;s a smoky French Martini (sung to the tune of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=63ZIf2H9S0E\">Funky Cold Medina<\/a> by Tone Loc)<\/p><\/div>\n<h5>How to make a French Martini<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A squeeze of lemon helps temper the sweetness but still it might be a bit sugary for some so this week we\u2019re using a fiery peaty whisky instead of vodka, Laphroaig 10 Year Old. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diffordsguide.com\/encyclopedia\/560\/cocktails\/french-martini\">Simon Difford<\/a>, this variation is actually known as a Le Frog. See what they did there? Vodka or whisky, however you make it, make sure you\u2019re dressed appropriately. We\u2019re thinking baggy grey Armani suit like Richard Gere in his prime, and don\u2019t be afraid to roll the sleeves up a little. Nice. Right, that\u2019s enough preamble. Let\u2019s make a smoky French Martini:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25ml <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/whiskies\/laphroaig-10-year-old-whisky\/\">Laphroaig 10 Year Old<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25ml <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterofmalt.com\/liqueurs\/chambord-liqueur\/\">Chambord<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10ml pineapple juice<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A squeeze of lemon juice<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pour all of the ingredients into an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake hard for eight seconds.
