The Nightcap: 23 March

It’s Friday, team! In this week’s edition of The Nightcap we take in not one but two super-rare, eyewateringly priced whiskies, count the cost of all that drunk shopping, eye up a gin diploma (yes, really) and even dip our toes into the world of interior design all in the name of English sparkling wine. Blame Pantone.

But before we get stuck in, let’s recap the biggest stories from the week in booze over on the blog. We started proceedings with a quick trip to Australia when we chatted to Starward’s founder David Vitale, exploring the meaning of ‘distinctly Australian whisky’. Then we checked our diaries and realised Easter is incoming. Eschew those chocolate eggs – we’ve got the best alternatives with an ABV rating instead! We also gave you a Battle of the Blends update and invited you to join the judging panel, before we hopped over to Texas for a Balcones bulletin as the brand marks its 10th anniversary year. If that’s not enough, we sent our Adam on a magical mystery evening courtesy of Glenlivet Code, AND we won a super-duper award – Icons of Whisky Global Online Retailer of the Year!

Caught your breath? Good, because we’re about to kick off again. And be warned… you might want to be sitting down when you read the prices of the first two whiskies…

Diageo Special Releases 2016

Diageo Special Release 2016

The 2016 Special Releases are available for Pre-Order now and we tasted them all last night, including the oldest ever Port Ellen!

When it comes to whisky releases, Diageo’s aptly named annual Special Releases always attract plenty of excitement each year. This year’s selection including whiskies from Port Ellen, Brora, Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Glenkinchie, Cragganmore, Linkwood, Auchroisk, Mannochmore and Cambus distilleries, all of which (at the time of writing) are available to Pre-Order!

One thing you may notice, is that we’re not going to be doing our lotteries or charity auctions for any of these, as we have for some other exciting releases this year, and there’s a simple reason for that. Unlike the situation we had with the Yamazaki Sherry Cask, for example (or will have shortly with a certain collection of American whiskeys), Diageo have endeavoured to price the rarer releases at their ‘market value’. That’s why the prices went up so quickly a couple of years back as they bridged the gap before more or less levelling out (this year’s Port Ellen, from ever-depleting supplies, is £100 more than last year, an increase of around 4%, whereas there had been increases of 100% in recent years).

Five New Boutique-ys Including a Bruichladdich

Glen Grant, Glenrothes, Bruichladdich, Linkwood, Blended Whisky #1 That Boutique-y Whisky Company

Well these have certainly been a wee while coming, but all good things, etc…

Truth is, I’ve sort of forgotten that any other type of whisky other than ‘peated’ exists given our recent exploits, but looking back at these labels reminds me that yes. They do indeed exist, and if memory serves, many of them are delicious.

Let’s start with the very first Blended Whisky ever produced by That Boutique-y Whisky Company; Blended Whisky Number One.
