Following our fortnight in the Netherlands, we head south to Belgium for the fifth instalment of Around The World In 80 Drams! I left you with a couple clues as to what distillery we’re visiting – namely I told you to think of 28 gold statues of Ned Flanders and that it would take me around two hours to travel there by beaver. This all sounds ridiculous now, but when I say that we’re visiting the Filliers distillery in Bachte-Maria-Leerne, it’ll all make sense. Right?
OK, so the “28” refers to their Dry Gin 28, the “gold statues” refers to Goldlys, the name of their whisky range and “Ned Flanders” refers to the distillery being in the East Flanders region of Deinze. The Zuidam distillery is 68.1 miles away from the Filliers distillery and the top speed of a beaver is 34 miles per hour, so if it properly ran the whole way, it’d take me two hours to get there. Clear? Splendid.
On 16th March five top London bartenders faced off in a fantastic cask-aged gin cocktail competition, which may also have been the best named event of all time!
Maverick Drinks had armed each bartender with a different gin that had been aged or rested in casks, all from their awesome portfolio. Following a preview tasting where this fascinating crossover category was discussed, it was time for the #ginsin main event held at Megaro Bar. The winner would be chosen by 7 ‘tasters’ (they’re the fun version of judges) and would subsequently win the opportunity to create their very own cask-aged gin, which will have their name and even their face on it if they really want. (The latter, it was said at the time, may actually depend on who wins…) There should also soon be a Gin, Sin & 5 Soaking Barrels Tasting Set from Drinks by the Dram we hear, so you’ll be able to sample all of these eminently mixable aged gins for yourself…

Right then chaps – we’re going to be making something that’s very much en-vogue at the moment for this week’s #MasterofCocktails: an Aviation.
Essentially, this cocktail is just a gin-sour with a dab of Violet Liqueur in it, but the sum of the parts is so much more than this. Also, as it’s probably one of the least sweet sours you’ll come across, it can still legitimately be called an aperitif.
We hope you were all able to enjoy a little time with the family, some nice pressies and plenty of bread sauce over Christmas, now it’s time to look towards New Year. That, of course, is all the excuse you should need to indulge in a little mid-holiday excess! This week’s #MasterofCocktails recipe is therefore a festive twist on the French 75 – tasty, refreshing and indulgent.
A good party drink this as we reach for the Champagne and wish good riddance to 2013!
It’s been a quite the year here at Master of Malt though (I’ll probably do a round up at some point), and we’ve also celebrated the arrival of many, many tiny humans, with babies seemingly popping out all over the business like Champagne corks on New Year’s Eve!

The Filliers family have been making jenever near Deinze, not far from Ghent, for more than five generations dating back to the 19th century. More recently, they became the producers of the first double still Belgian whisky, and even more recently, Master of Malt made their fine products available in the UK retail market for the first time ever!
