Master of Cocktails – IL Beetz

Master of Cocktails IL Beetz

Right everyone – ready for another instalment of #MasterofCocktails? This week’s is pretty awesome, and has a pretty awesome name too – IL Beetz. I’ll explain the reasoning behind that later…

We’re putting together this drink using FEW Spirits American Gin – super-rich and ‘whisky-like’. It’s more than enough to stand up to the rich, roots-y quality of the Beetroot juice we’re using.

So – to business.

Master of Cocktails Prep. – Cask-Aged Martinez

Master of Cocktails Christmas Panacea

Right then folks, you’ve had a day to assemble the bottles we’ll be needing for the prep for the upcoming #MasterofCocktails – This is really the ‘Christmas Panacea’ you’ve been dreaming of.

If you’re anything like me, there’ll be a seemingly endless procession of loved-ones throughout the Christmas period and ‘another Baileys’ only works so far. So – we’re going to make ourselves a cask of Martinez. Because, well, you know… Stir, strain and serve rocks.

Master of Cocktails – Maid in Cuba

Master of Cocktails Made in Cuba

Right then Ladies and Gents – time for this week’s #MasterofCocktails. We’re going to be making a drink I first tried a year or so ago at the Savoy, and is a drink created by the one and only @tomwalker86 for a Bacardi bartending competition, so it of course prominently features the classic rum at its core – yes, we’re making a ‘Maid In Cuba’ recipe this week.

We were supposed to make it last week, so thanks for waiting patiently. Definitely well worth the wait, though. It’s a good ‘un.

Master of Cocktails – The Sazerac

Master of Cocktails The Sazerac

Another classic for this week’s #MasterofCocktails, the Sazerac.

Now this really is a very, very simple drink, but, like the Mojito from a few weeks ago, one that people love to overcomplicate. The most common over-complication is the belief that you need to stir a sugar cube with the whiskey forever and a day…

Luckily enough though, some bright spark has invented this stuff. It’s called Sugar Syrup. You may have heard of it.

Gin, Sin & 5 Soaking Barrels!

Gin, Sin & 5 Soaking Barrels

On 16th March five top London bartenders faced off in a fantastic cask-aged gin cocktail competition, which may also have been the best named event of all time!

Maverick Drinks had armed each bartender with a different gin that had been aged or rested in casks, all from their awesome portfolio. Following a preview tasting where this fascinating crossover category was discussed, it was time for the #ginsin main event held at Megaro Bar. The winner would be chosen by 7 ‘tasters’ (they’re the fun version of judges) and would subsequently win the opportunity to create their very own cask-aged gin, which will have their name and even their face on it if they really want. (The latter, it was said at the time, may actually depend on who wins…) There should also soon be a Gin, Sin & 5 Soaking Barrels Tasting Set from Drinks by the Dram we hear, so you’ll be able to sample all of these eminently mixable aged gins for yourself…

Maverick Mr Fox – a Thanksgiving feast of Cocktails!

Maverick Mr Fox

Blimey, it’s been pretty busy around here lately! Jumping crocodiles, there’s been a lot to do! Most of it has something to with some little celebration towards the end of the month or something…

Just kidding, I can’t pretend to not be excited about Santa! I’m literally bursting with festive excitement! You see, I bloody love Christmas, me! The decorations, the music, all the wrapped up pressies and, of course, the Die Hard movies.

What on earth is there not to like?

Master of Cocktails – Christmassy Ginger Sour

Master of Cocktails Christmassy Ginger Sour

Here we are, in the second week of advent already! It must be time for the first, but definitely not the last, #MasterofCocktails Christmassy drink of December, this one being a festive twist on a classic…

You see, we love a good whiskey sour, but we also sure do love warming, Christmassy flavours at this time of year with ginger being one of the yummiest and most satisfying of them all. Back in October we not only made the perfect Eggnog but also some Bathtub Ginger Beer using fresh ginger and (perhaps unsurprisingly) ginger beer. Both cocktail recipes are well worth a revisit as we approach Christmas, but this time around we’ll be getting our ginger warmth from an excellent ginger liqueur as well as gingerbread syrup, which brings some darn’ tasty baked goodness into the mix!

New Products – Batshit Mental Ideas!

Batman in asylum

Some said that Galileo Galilei was crazy when he claimed to have evidence of a heliocentric solar system.

Some even said that Robert Matthew Van Winkle had lost his marbles when he decided to try his hand at being a white rapper.

These days we of course know that the Earth revolves around the Sun and that Vanilla Ice’s To the Extreme became the fastest selling hip-hop album of all time, but it still takes a brave soul to swim against the tide like some kind of beautiful maverick.

Calling all Distillers…

Michael and FEW American Gin

Ben:

We make a lot of cool stuff. This has been proven. As of a couple of weeks ago, we’ve got someone who’s going to be responsible for getting all this cool stuff into bars, retailers and your house (specifically you) throughout the UK, and worldwide.

We also really like exciting, cool whiskies and spirits distilled all over the world. Given that we’re reasonably decent-sized now, it sort of makes sense for us to start importing some of the cooler brands out there. We’ve also got someone who’s going to be responsible for bringing all those awesome products into the UK and getting them into the self-same bars, retailers and also into your house.

FEW Spirits – Distilled in Evanston, Illinois

If there was ever a word so god damn awful it’s guaranteed to send a shudder down your spine it is the dreaded p-word – prohibition *a wolf howls in the background and you get the feeling you are being followed by a man with an axe*.

This was the boozeless condition that afflicted the United States of America for thirteen parched years thanks to the tireless campaigning of the American Temperance Movement.

The Movement advocated the ‘Noble Experiment’ to save society from the horrors of alcohol abuse throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and they succeeded in 1920 with the 18th Amendment to the Constitution and the Volstead Act which completely banned the sale of alcohol in the U.S.A.

This led to a decade and three years of corruption and violence across America as mobsters and moonshiners sought to bring alcohol illicitly to the understandably thirsty public before the Amendment was finally repealed in 1933.
