Feis Ile 2013: Day 4 (Laphroaig) – Cairdeas-ing Fairies

Link and Navi

“I want to go on a fairy hunt”, I proclaimed this morning (which seemed to provoke a response of concern and confusion in equal measure).

Fairies or ‘little people’ as they are also known (it is actually bad luck to refer to them as ‘fairies’ or ‘faeries’ in some places) are common throughout Gaelic folklore. They’re not tiny little butterfly-winged creatures either, but rather can be up to a few feet tall with the potential to also shapeshift. Tricksy and sometimes mischievous (starting to sound a bit like Loki) they are to be respected, if only with a healthy slice of whimsy.

Feis Ile 2013: Day 3 (Caol Ila) – Caol-Itos, Way

Monopoly Islay

The day ended with a game of Islay-opoly where three people landed on Caol Ila at the same time at one point (apt).

That morning we had headed over to Port Askaig, to that very distillery, to continue the search for our lost dog Peaty…

Have you seen him?

Feis Ile 2013: Day 2 (Bruichladdich) – Magnum

Bruichladdich Magnum

Bruichladdich Day had a Hawaii Five-O theme, with Laddie Five-O celebrating Jim McEwan’s 50th year in the whisky business! A themed day! Fantastic, let’s get involved!

Now, how does one go about dressing as Hawaii Five-O?… 1970s suits?… It struck us that there was another Hawaii-based investigator with a fantastic theme tune who would provide some much more satisfying fancy dress…

Feis Ile 2013: Day 1 (Lagavulin) – Master of Malt Mill

Malt Mill distillery

Saturday 25th May 2013 was Lagavulin Day at the Fèis Ìle but more importantly it was the day that the Master of Malt team ‘uncovered’ a number of priceless bottles of Malt Mill new-make spirit.* It was previously believed that only one bottle, from the final filling, was crudely preserved for posterity when this near mythical distillery closed its doors in 1962. Extraordinarily, we now know that a further four bottles have survived from the second-to-last right down to the to the fifth-to-last fillings.** A spokesperson has said that it is “unlikely” that any further bottles are still out there.

Feis Ile 2013: Islay Bound

Ferry to Islay

Fèis Ìle 2013. Here. We. Come.

We set off for the Islay whisky festival on Thursday morning with Benedict and myself in one car, Cat and Monsieur Vachon in the Malt Mobile and a rendezvous set for that evening in Edinburgh, our port of call for the night. Successfully avoiding Ben’s extensive heavy metal collection, we were free to discuss vital musical questions such as “Exactly how many years have the ladies loved cool James for now?”. Vital, pressing questions.

Feis Ile – Islay Competition 3: Islay Treasure Hunt – Back to the Future

Doc Brown great Scott!

Our third and final Fèis Ìle competition is the big one – a chance to not only win a full 50cl bottle of Caol Ila from That Boutique-y Whisky Company, but to be immortalised on their next cultish comic book style-label: a Laphroaig single malt!

We’ve heard on the grapevine that a Dr. E. Brown of Hill Valley sent out 12 messages in bottles, which are due to wash up on the shores of Islay in just a couple of days! Some crazy stuff on that grapevine, I can tell ya!

Feis Ile – Islay Competition 2: Peaty, The Lost Distillery Dog

Peaty distillery dog

Following on from Competition 1, it’s time to offer a little more detail on the second competition we’re running whilst on Islay. Let me introduce you to ‘Peaty’, our bold and feisty little friend. He’s also a toy dog.

Peaty’s hero is Shortie, the Ardbeg distillery dog, but he loves all Islay whisky equally and when we take him to visit the distilleries he often doesn’t want to leave! If you find him on your travels between 24th May and 2nd June, we’re offering a reward for his safe return to the Malt Mobile – a full 50cl bottle of our brand new That Boutique-y Whisky Company Caol Ila, worth £54.95! One good deed deserves another, after all.

Feis Ile – Islay Competition 1: Flag down the Master of Malt Mobile!

The Malt Mobile

In just 7 days time a crack team of MoMers (MoMists? MoMians? Something that sounds less like a cult?) will be setting off in the direction of the Fèis Ìle whisky festival on Islay!

Excitingly, as mentioned in our earlier Islay blog post, we will be running 3 Competitions while we are out there! The time has now come to break it down even further with a little more detail on each competition starting with numero uno…

Send us your Feis Ile photos with the Malt Mobile

We’ve been back for a couple of weeks now and we’re slowly beginning to feel human again after the rigours of our ten days on Islay.

This year’s Feis Ile was quite an experience, from the fabulous food at the Lagavulin dinner to partying with the Balvenie boys, Cask Strength, et al in our very own hot tub.

Since we’ve been back, we’ve also been enjoying the entries to our competition, some of which I have peppered throughout this post.
