Master of Cocktails The Naked Barista

Greetings cocktail-lovers. Who’s up for a swift whisky cocktail then? The second #MasterofCocktails whisky cocktail in a row, no less. Is it you?

If it is indeed you, that’s perfect, as that’s what we’re doing for this week’s #MasterofCocktails!

This week we’re making a drink I’ve named ‘The Naked Barista’. The reasons will hopefully become clear as we go through the recipe.

Master of Cocktails Campari Soda

Right then cocktail fans, we’re doing a Campari and Soda recipe for this week’s #MasterofCocktails. I say ‘cocktails’… A bit of a confession, this week’s drink isn’t *really* a cocktail. It’s more of a ‘mixed drink’. So this week is less ‘cocktail’, and more 50:50 confession/love-letter.

I’ll start with the confession bit. I properly fucking LOVE Campari. In fact, I think I’d probably go as far as to say that if I had to pick only one product (not ‘range’ or ‘category’) for a desert island, it’d be Campari. It’s not better than ‘whisky’ as a category, not by a long chalk, but if I had to pick one single SKU/line for the rest of time (at a sensible price), I think it’d probably be Campari. Same goes for wine, beer, gin, everything in fact. It’s a *superb*, superb drink. And the purest means of its enjoyment? Campari and Soda.

Clear ice balls

As I’m sure you all remember, about 3 months ago I told you all how to make beautiful clear ice for your cocktails.

Today, I’m going to show you an easier way. You know how much we all like things that are easy, right?

It started when a chap called Dan Skinner* posted an innocent comment at the end of the post mentioned above, saying that there were some guys in the USA making directional freezing equipment.

Alternate Title: “If it’s not perfect, what’s the fucking point?”

My name is Ben. I like it when things are done properly*. This post, therefore, has been quite a while in the making.

It turns out making clear ice is hard. Very hard in fact. There’s a very good reason that companies like this exist. In fact, if you’re based in, or near, London – you should probably just stop reading this, man up, buy yourself a chest freezer to house some of their wares, and give them a call.

If like me though, you’re out of their delivery range, you’re going to need to make your own**.

Luckily, every single one of you has the requisite equipment for this, so there really aren’t any excuses. You can make big, clear ice with zero investment. Sounds like I’m trying to get you to buy a timeshare. I’m not. Promise.
