Master of Malt Single Cask Series

We are auctioning a one-of-a-kind bottle of Scapa Jutland 16 Year Old named after HMS Indefatigable, to raise funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

The Scapa distillery have produced a limited edition bottling of their single malt Scotch whisky to mark the centenary of the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of the First World War, with the profits raised to be donated to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Only 249 bottles of Scapa Jutland 16 Year Old were produced, and 11 of them were named after ships from the British and German Navies which took part in the battle, including HMS Invincible and HMS Queen Mary. We are auctioning the bottle named after HMS Indefatigable to raise further funds for the RNLI – the auction will begin at 16.30 BST on Monday 6th June and conclude at 18.00 BST on Friday 17th June.

Isle of Jura 16 Year Old Diurachs' Own

It’s Day 4, and what do we have here? A single malt Scotch whisky? Yes, from the “extremely unget-at-able” Isle of Jura, as I once heard young George Orwell describe it.

It’s considerably easier to ‘get-at’ if you have flying reindeer of course, and I do rather enjoy travelling to the island on business every Christmas Eve. Less ice than at home, but many more deer! Mrs Claus and I are only outnumbered 9:2 (used to be 4:1 before we adopted that ruddy schnozzled fellow) by our four-legged antlered friends, whilst the Diurach of Jura are outnumbered 30:1 by the island’s red deer!

Hence why Jura or ‘Diùra’ literally means ‘deer island’. This dram, meanwhile, spent 14 years in American white oak casks and two years in ex-Amoroso Oloroso Sherry casks, and is said to be the whisky of choice for the Diurach themselves…

You remember our friends from Caskstrength.net? Bespectacled, dapper sort of chaps? They’re into whisky and Alan Partridge, do some events…?

Anyway, they’ve gone and teamed up with BenRiach to put together one of them there special bottlings, they have. And between you and me, it is a delight. Not just because it comes with a rockin’ cotton tote bag (well, only the first 50 bottles, mind you), not just because it has a pink label (I am a sucker for pink) [ed: don’t you mean red?], and not just because it spent four years in a PX cask (I am a major sucker for PX). It is delightful because it was hand-selected by Joel and Neil themselves, only 296 bottles are to be released, and you can only buy it from us. What an expression of a beautiful friendship…or, marriage?

Glengoyne Glenguin 16 Year Old Shiraz Finish

Welcome back everyone! We hope you’ve had a great Christmas, and wish you all a very enjoyable 2010!

Over the festive season we’ve sampled a number of delicious whiskies – Christmas really is a great time for a good dram with some good company – and we wanted to mention one of favourite winter warmers.

At the time of writing, we’re surrounded by several inches of snow, and the thought of a little winter sun is rather appealing… Well, we present to you Glengoyne Glenguin 16 Year Old Shiraz Finish. A Highland single malt finished in Australian Shiraz casks for a touch of Antipodean joie de vivre!

The Shiraz casks come from the Glenguin wine estate in Australia’s Hunter Valley and it’s no accident that Glenguin and Glengoyne sound alike. It all began with Arthur William Tedder, born in Glenguin, Scotland to a Customs and Excise man at the Glengoyne distillery. Arthur was a pilot in the RAF during the First Wold War, as well as holding high command during the Second. After an eminent war career, Tedder was offered a peerage and became the 1st Baron Tedder of Glenguin. Arthur’s grandson, Robin Tedder, is one of Australia’s fifteen Masters of Wine and he also founded the Glenguin Wine Estate in 1988, which brings us back to the whisky…
