Day 17 of #WhiskyAdvent and time to leave Scotland once again, for today’s Whisky Advent Calendar dram is a single malt from Sweden!
Mackmyra opened their first distillery back in 1999 and have since gained a reputation for producing some top malts. In 2012 they opened a second site, a gravity-run facility that stands at 37 metres high! This is where all of their distillation now takes place, save for the odd special run.
Brukswhisky or ‘The Swedish Whisky‘, first released in 2010, is matured primarily in first fill bourbon barrels with some Sherry and Swedish oak casks also used, as well as some smokier malt, adding to the complexity of this light and tasty core expression. Daniel Craig enjoyed some in the remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo a year before he was seen drinking Macallan in Skyfall, if you like to keep track of these things (as Jake and Sam do).
Heaven 17.
Tasting Note for Mackmyra Brukswhisky (The Swedish Whisky):
Nose: Fresh, delicate fruit aromas with vanilla pods. Pine nuts, pine needles, raspberry bushes and mixed peels. Ryvita and Sesame Snaps in support.
Palate: Vanilla cream, custard even and more fruit. Red berries, boiled sweets and rich, warming bourbon.
Finish: Spicy oak, apple pie and fresh rye bread whilst remaining light and nimble.
Overall: Tremendous easy-drinking single malt whisky from Sweden.
