Speymalt Whisky Distributors, parent of the Benromach distillery and Gordon & MacPhail, has announced plans to build a brand new malt whisky distillery at Craggan in the Cairngorms National Park.

News of new whisky distilleries continues to be music to our ears, and the hits keep coming. Plans have just been announced for a brand new malt whisky distillery to be built at Craggan in the Cairngorms National Park by Speymalt Whisky Distributors. As the parent company of the Benromach distillery and long-running whisky specialist Gordon & MacPhail, setting up a second distillery ought to be an exciting project with a particularly delicious result – more Scotch whisky for us all to enjoy!

While the plans are still in their very early stages (Speymalt is hoping to start the consultation process with the local community and submit planning application later in 2018), the location picked out for the distillery is absolutely cracking. Located near Grantown-on-Spey, Craggan is home to spectacular views of the Cairngorm mountains, and sits within the largest national park in the British Isles. On the location, Speymalt’s managing director Ewen Mackintosh (pictured above) said “We believe we have found the perfect place for our new distillery at Craggan. It’s a stunning location with strong transport links and can accommodate the distillery, warehousing and a visitor experience… The Cairngorms are a beautiful part of the world and we aim to design a distillery which will be in keeping with this wonderful landscape.”

BenromachThe Benromach distillery – soon to be home to gin as well as whisky!
If everything goes their way, Speymalt is hoping to start building the distillery in 2019, and reckon it should take 12 months to complete. In the meantime, the team won’t be resting on any laurels what-so-ever. Not only has the whole Gordon & MacPhail range got a redesign recently, including shiny new bottles and entirely new bottling ranges, the Benromach distillery has also announced plans to convert a former malt barn into a gin distillery and release its very first non-whisky tipple. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the development of Speymalt’s new whisky distillery as the busy days ahead progress!
