The third batch of Diageo’s Managers’ Choice whiskies is looming (which you can preorder from us now), following the first two batches in September 2009 and January 2010 (with the fourth and final batch set for May of this year). Ultimately the complete selection will feature a single cask bottling from every one of the 27 working distilleries owned by Diageo, which is a noteworthy feat, and quite a talking point amongst whisky drinkers.
The third batch includes seven single malts (from Glenkinchie, Caol Ila, Glen Ord, Dailuaine, Royal Lochnagar, Inchgower and Mannochmore). These have been specially selected by a group of Diageo’s distillery managers and experts and are bottled from single casks. Because these are single casks the outturn of each scotch whisky can vary anywhere from 200 up to 640 bottles per cask. The prices range from £200-£300 a bottle.
The release of Diageo’s Managers’ Choice range has kicked up quite a storm; in fact it’s been one of the most polarizing series in recent history. The main issue is the price point, which is quite high considering these are relatively young whiskies. What is most attractive about the whiskies is sheer range, and rarity. Many of these whiskies are from largely unknown distilleries, with just the odd cask bottled here and there. Under the Managers’ Choice range there is now a comprehensive set of malts from 27 distilleries, selected by some of the industries top noses and palates.
