by Master of Malt     16. May 2016 12:23

Glenmorangie Free Shipping

Purchase any bottle of Glenmorangie before the end of June and get Free Shipping on your *entire* order.

“Well, this does exactly what it says on the tin,” is what we’d be able to say if we let you know about all the cool things that happen on Master of Malt via the medium of tins rather than blogs. However, we don’t. We use blogs. As such, we’d never dream of saying that. However, the simple sentiment of the sentence remains - if you purchase any bottle of Glenmorangie before the end of June, you will get Free Shipping on your entire order (or £5 off shipping if you're outside the UK).

Kingsbarns Distillery Passes Some Big Milestones...

by Sam Smith     2. February 2016 14:07

Kingsbarns Distillery Founders' Club

The Kingsbarns Distillery in Fife has just passed some big milestones - not only was it their first anniversary in November last year (they launched the Kingsbarns Distillery Founders' Club to celebrate), but January was the anniversary of their first mash and first spirit distillation! These are memorable events for new distilleries - the start of their journey to making whisky! Congratulations to Kingsbarns Distillery Manager Peter Holroyd and his team!

Burns Night: Traditional vs. Untraditional

by Sam Smith     19. January 2016 17:04

Robert Burns

So. Burns Night. That’s next week. Burns Suppers date back to 1801, with the first one being held by friends of the celebrated Scottish poet Robert Burns. They’ve continued ever since, with people around the world enjoying haggis, poetry and whisky on the 25th of January. When something happens for over 200 years, sometimes people think about trying to do something a bit untraditional - like the year that Monkey Shoulder hosted a Burns night celebrating Montgomery Burns and Jake wrote a blog post mostly about a completely different TV show character.

Around The World In 80 Drams - Week 4 - Zuidam

by Sam Smith     18. September 2015 16:30

Baarle Nassau

Welcome to another edition of Around The World In 80 Drams, where we are continuing to explore distilleries from the Netherlands. Last week we took a look at Lucas Bols in Amsterdam and their long history with distilling. Today we’ll be heading south to visit another well-known Dutch distillery, one that uses windmills to mill the barley to make their whisky - yes, we’re looking at Zuidam!

The Zuidam distillery is situated in Baarle-Nassau, about 60 miles south of Amsterdam. As I mentioned last week, it would take me around one and a half hours to travel between the two by pelican going full pelt, with their top speed being 40 mph. If I was lucky the pelican would carry me in its big beak like that scene in that fish movie.

Around The World In 80 Drams - Week 2 - Adnams

by Sam Smith     28. August 2015 15:30

Southwold

Welcome back to my Around The World In 80 Drams journey, which kicked off last week from the East London Liquor Co., unsurprisingly in East London. I left you with something of a riddle at the end of the last post, leaving hints as to where I’m off to next: sun, sea, superb beer and how it would take me 23 hours to travel there by pug (pugs run at an average of 3-5 miles per hour). Of course, I’m off to Adnams in Southwold!

Now, when I said I’m bad at geography and that this series will help me learn things, I meant it. If you had asked me where Southwold was before I looked at a map, I’d have said it was somewhere near Southampton. “It’s got ‘South’ in the name and those two kind of sound similar, they’re probably right next to each other,” I believe were the words that went through my head. Well, it’s safe to say I’m learning already, as Southwold is a little bit more northerly than I thought.

The Day of the Dalmunach

by Sam Smith     22. June 2015 09:49

Dalmunach Distillery

If you’ve long been wondering about what Chivas Brothers will be doing with the site of the Imperial distillery, which was mothballed in 1998, you can wonder no longer. Today, the 22nd of June 2015, the Dalmunach distillery will be officially opened by the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon.

Plans were put in place to construct the Dalmunach distillery back in 2012, and the stills were ready to be fired up in October of last year. With the capability of producing 10 million litres of spirit each year, Dalmunach will be supporting the continued growth of Chivas Brothers well known blends, like Chivas Regal, Royal Salute and Ballantine’s.

Tasmanian Whisky - Everything You Need to Know! (Part 8: William McHenry and The Small Concern)

by Michael Orson     20. February 2015 17:03

William McHenry distillery

This is the final instalment in my series on Tasmanian Whisky and we begin with William McHenry and Sons; a distillery located about as remotely as you could imagine, on the southeastern tip of Tasmania.

The distillery has its connections with the Gaelic whisky world; the owner, William McHenry, being a descendant of an Isle of Skye whisky smuggler. By trade, McHenry was in the pharmaceutical industry, and lived in Sydney, and one balmy Australian day at a barbecue, a friend made a passing comment about William’s Scottish roots, and the idea of making a whisky in honour of them. A few years later, McHenry moved with his family to Tasmania, settling on a beautiful 100-acre estate close to Port Arthur, an historic penal colony.
