Feis Ile 2014, Tales From The Isle - Lagavulin Day

by Jake Mountain     25. May 2014 09:47

Tales From The Isle Lagavulin Feis Ile

We've made it to Islay! In fact, we've been here since Thursday (quite keen) but it hasn't all been plain sailing. Alexandra and I actually missed our ferry, which, as every other one was fully booked for days, was a bit of a problem. Fortunately we managed to board another by using our powers of persuasion* and were soon running up and down the metal staircases on either side freeing hostages finding the very best views of Gigha, Northern Ireland, the Paps of Jura and, of course, Islay herself, including the silhouette of good ol' Cnoc Rhaonastil.

Without further ado though, welcome one and all to Tales From The Isle! Over the course of eight issues we'll be bringing you our own unique take on the events and releases at this year's Fèis Ìle, the legendary Islay whisky festival, as well as sharing some dark tales and perhaps even an adventure or two from this famous whisky isle...

Greetings traveller...

New Product Range: DARKNESS! Single Malt Whiskies

by Ben Ellefsen     9. May 2014 08:21

DARKNESS! Single Malt Whiskies

Doesn’t really take a huge deal of explanation, this one, does it?

What we’ve gone and done is take a range of delicious single malts, and finished them for a touch over 3 months in specially commissioned, 50 litre, First-Fill Sherry casks.

Traditionally known as ‘Octave Casks’, these smaller-than-average maturation vessels give a significantly greater surface area to volume ratio, meaning more cask-influence, and more of that superb rich, Christmas-cakey deliciousness that we all know and love from heavily-sherried whiskies.

Ardbeg Auriverdes – Coming Soon

by Ben Ellefsen     10. April 2014 12:40

Ardbeg Auriverdes

So – it’s that time of year again isn’t it? I checked my calendar the other day, and realised it’s 6 weeks until Feis Ile. 6 weeks. I’ve got no idea who’s stealing all the time, but as whoever it is takes with one hand, they surely give with the other – we’re only 7 weeks away from the release of this year’s Ardbeg Day special edition.

This year’s offering is called ‘Auriverdes’ – a portmanteau of the latin ‘Aurum’ (Gold) and Portuguese ‘Verdes’ (Green) – Gold for the colour of the whisky, and Green for the iconic green* bottle in which Ardbeg is presented.

Why Portuguese, I hear you ask? Well apparently there’s some sort of kickball tourney on later this year in Brazil? Not really my sort of thing, but I’m sure Jake will use it as an excuse to bore the crap out of you / keep you entertained (delete per your preference).

More Boutique-y Whisky. New releases from Kilchoman, Glentauchers, Littlemill and Glen Garioch.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company Kilchoman, Littlemill, Glentauchers and Glen Garioch

Well that was quite a Christmas.

In fact it’s been so busy that 4 new releases have passed us by with nary a mention. Changing that, now I am here with the writing about things. Yes.

Without further ado, onto the explanations behind the crazy stuff that’s fallen out of my head and onto paper.

First up this time, we’ve got an absolute belter of an Islay Whisky, from Kilchoman.

For Christmas this year…

by Michael Orson     4. December 2013 11:02

Dear Santa

With plans to make Christmas 2013 closely resemble a night out with Charles Bukowski during his downtime, I’ve been thinking hard about what booze I want. Historically, I would have written to Santa Claus, but I recently read a thought-provoking essay by biologist Dickie Dawkins and now no longer believe in his existence. This, then, is an open letter to anyone who knows me and wants to get me the boozes.

Bowmore 50 Year Old 1961

Bowmore 50 Year Old 1961

Hello, my name’s Mike.

If you remember me at all, you’ll probably know me as the chap who wrote tasting notes and things, and used the word “soupcon” too much. If you work at Master of Malt, you may know me as “the bloke that did that thing at the Christmas Party” or “the terrible man who did that other thing in Sales Director Ben’s office which Ben still hasn’t found out about”.

Regardless of whether or not you know me, you better learn something, punk: I’m back from Africa, I’ve just tasted a £16,000 bottle of whisky and now I’m going to tell you all about it.

New Boutique-y Whiskies; Allt-á-Bhainne, Glen Keith, and Miltonduff

by Ben Ellefsen     1. October 2013 13:11

That Boutique-y Whisky Company Miltonduff, Glen Keith and Allt-a-Bhainne

Well it’s certainly been quite a while since we put out any new Boutique-y whiskies. Over 3 months in fact. Erm. Sorry about that. Will try and be more hyperactive in the future. Promise.

After a clutch of slightly more esoteric ideas in the last set of releases, we’re coming firmly back to the ‘whisky world’ with these three, each one featuring some of our compadres from the geeky, obsessive, and at times slightly worrying world we all inhabit.

Ardbeg TracTOUR!

by Jake Mountain     2. August 2013 12:13

Ardbeg Tractour

Ever been stuck behind a tractor on a narrow road on Islay? Or anywhere else for that matter? Ardbeg, it seems, have created the perfect solution...

With a little help from automobile whizz extraordinaire Paul Burnham, Ardbeg have succeeded in turning a reliable farmer’s best friend (the sort of indestructible behemoth you could leave rusting in a field for a decade and it would still start up first time) into a shiny chrome-clad hot rod! In fact, as you can see in the video below, their 1950s Massey Ferguson tractor can now show Formula 1 cars from the following decade who's boss!

Feis Ile 2013 map

It's fair to say that Feis Ile aka That Boutique-y Whisky Company On Tour 2013 was a rip-roaring success! Enjoyment was had by all, 3 fantastic Competitions were run and entered into with rabid enthusiasm. And nobody died, either! Great success.

From our Distillery Dog Peaty getting lost (and getting found again) to our Message in a Bottle Islay Treasure Hunt, to loads of you literally flagging us down with the signal, you (yes, you) all made this our best Fèis Ìle yet! We’re already hard at work planning next year’s shenannigans...
