Calais Strike Causing Delays on European Orders

by Master of Malt     2. July 2015 13:14

Calais Strike Operation Stack

There are strikes in Calais. You probably know all about it from that television programme 'The News', or else read about about it online. It's not just folk breaking into UK-bound lorries which is the problem though - MyFerryLink workers walked out on Monday, closing the port of Calais. For the last few days Operation Stack has had to turn 30 miles of the M20 into a car park to accommodate all the lorries that haven't been able to get across to mainland Europe. And it's just possible that your parcel is in one of these lorries. Or, if you're placing your order now, that there will be a slight delay.

Talisker Skye in June

by Jake Mountain     30. June 2015 18:00

Earlier this year Talisker added another no age statement whisky to its range: Talisker Skye. This means that whilst it may not be able to claim to be "the only Single Malt Scotch Whisky rugged enough to call the Isle of Skye its home" for too much longer (with progress continuing at Torabhaig), Talisker has found another way to cement the link between the distillery and its beloved, windswept home.

The Day of the Dalmunach

by Sam Smith     22. June 2015 09:49

Dalmunach Distillery

If you’ve long been wondering about what Chivas Brothers will be doing with the site of the Imperial distillery, which was mothballed in 1998, you can wonder no longer. Today, the 22nd of June 2015, the Dalmunach distillery will be officially opened by the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon.

Plans were put in place to construct the Dalmunach distillery back in 2012, and the stills were ready to be fired up in October of last year. With the capability of producing 10 million litres of spirit each year, Dalmunach will be supporting the continued growth of Chivas Brothers well known blends, like Chivas Regal, Royal Salute and Ballantine’s.

Tasting Ledaig 42 Year Old Dùsgadh 1972

by Jake Mountain     19. June 2015 12:00

Ledaig 42 Dusgadh

Crikey it's been busy around here lately! Father's Day is upon us and we also have imminent releases coming out the wazoo! Sometimes you simply have to drop everything though, for a short while at least, because, just occasionally, a very special whisky demands that.

A 42 year old Ledaig? Yeah, that'll certainly do it. This 1972 vintage is the oldest ever release of the peated single malt from Tobermory distillery, and Burn Stewart informs us that the earliest possible date they could release another Ledaig that's at least 40 years old would be in 2036! Special, this most definitely is.

Gift Vouchers Are Evil

by Master of Malt     11. June 2015 13:35

Master of Malt Gift Vouchers

Vouchers… Vouchers, vouchers, vouchers. They’re the dirty little secret of retailing. They are a little bit of magic. Shops have somehow convinced people to hand over their money in return for something which becomes literally worthless anywhere between 6 months and a couple of years later or whenever you lose it (whichever comes sooner).

In the meantime they get to have your hard-earned money sitting in their bank account earning interest, or financing the operation of their business. And in return for this you, the gift voucher owner, the Lord of the gift voucher manor get… nothing.

*Nothing*. Does that seem right to you? No. Nor us.

Gascony Calling: A Single Cask Series Armagnac!

by Jake Mountain     10. June 2015 11:00

Château de Castex Armagnac Master of Malt

So it may be gorgeous,
So it may not be famous,
Armagnac, twenty-one years old.

There's a new release in the Master of Malt Single Cask Series charts, and the artist isn't even Scottish! In fact, it's not even whisky. (We do have some more Single Cask whiskies on the way shortly though... and not necessarily all from Scotland...) Extending the range into different spirit types entirely, we're delighted to present our very first independent bottling of Armagnac!

Master of Cocktails First Press Terroir Sour

Greetings to you all. Time for another #MasterofCocktails? I think so. Last one for a few weeks this, due to impending progeny.

Today we're making a drink that sounds thoroughly weird, but I assure you is delicious. It's a gin sour that uses olive oil as an emulsifier.

Now - you can make this drink by shaking, but there is a better way if you're making at home instead of in a bar. So - we're going to repair to the kitchen.

Master of Cocktails Tea Thyme with Pepper Pig

Right then boys and girls. Time for this week's #MasterofCocktails - this week we're making a pork-infused wet martini. Sound appetising? Well it should - It's delicious.

This one's called 'Tea Thyme with Pepper Pig' (I'm still waiting for my cocktail-naming crown to be delivered, by the way).

Plenty of prep work to do before bringing it all together, so let's get to it.

Master of Cocktails - Mutiny on the Bounty

by Ben Ellefsen     26. May 2015 08:55

Master of Cocktails Mutiny On The Bounty

Well greetings cocktail fans. Everyone enjoy their bank-holiday weekend? Ready for some #MasterofCocktails action? This week we're going to make a super-summery drink, based on this baby - Rumbullion! XO 15 Years Old.

If you're going to be joining in with this one, there's a quick step you're going to need to do a day in advance...

We're going to add a single heaped teaspoon of our raw cacao to the coconut water. It's important to do this 24 hours before you make your cocktail as water-extraction (which is what we want here) takes a lot longer than alcohol-based extraction.
