Around The World In 80 Drams - Week 1 - East London Liquor Company

by Sam Smith     21. August 2015 16:30

I’m bad at geography. I’m not a proud man, I’ll own own up to my faults and I definitely suck at geography. Recently I told a good friend that there couldn’t be more than around 70 countries and even bought a map to prove it. Boy was my face red. So now I own a map for the first time in my life, and I figure I should use it to rectify my lack of geographical expertise. How, you ask? Drinks, obviously.

I plan to travel the world, like the great (fictional) Phileas Fogg before me. However, I will be doing so via the medium of delicious spirits and probably Wikipedia to find out a bit more about where said spirits come from. Join me as I set sail on my Around The World In 80 Drams voyage and marvel at how little I know about the planet I’ve called home for my entire life (I’m smart in other ways, honest!).

New Product: 1897 Quinine Gin - supporting Malaria No More UK

by Jake Mountain     20. August 2015 09:00

1897 Quinine Gin

Something really very special here. An innovative new London Dry Gin - launching today - which is not only delicious but will also help save lives. 1897 Quinine Gin is made with cinchona bark (the natural and traditional source of quinine) as well as fresh citrus peels cold distilled under vacuum to extract flavours that remain full of vitality and freshness. In the case of the cinchona bark this means ethereal and floral notes that contribute heavily to the overall flavour profile of the finished gin.

As well as being a truly stunning spirit, 1897 Quinine Gin supports a fantastic charity in Malaria No More UK. For every bottle sold, over half of the producer's profit (at least £5) will be donated. That's enough to buy, deliver and hang a mosquito net for a family living at risk from malaria in Africa - protecting their children whilst they sleep.‪

Buying Whisky in the USA just got cheaper (and clearer)

by Master of Malt     5. August 2015 12:15

United States

Good news everyone… Buying whisky in the USA just got cheaper (and clearer).

As many of you will know, here at MOM we've been selling things at the same price in the US and UK for a long time, in both cases incorporating the cost of the local taxes into the price of the whisky so you could always see exactly what you were going to be charged on the product page before you even got to the checkout, without any “hidden extras”.

Of course, there was still the shipping cost to add on, but everyone already knows shipping is a thing, so it’s not exactly a shock when you get to the checkout.

by Ben Ellefsen     3. August 2015 09:13

Master of Cocktails Tasting Notes Reconstructed

Greetings one and all to another edition of #MasterofCocktails. If you didn't catch last week's instalment, you might not have seen that we're changing up how we do this - a much less step-by-step affair, though you'll be getting more advanced, exciting recipes, with more focus on presentation and garnish. This week we're going to be using the 'Beast of Dufftown', Mortlach single malt Scotch whisky.

Free Shipping to Commemorate Black Tot Day

by Jake Mountain     24. July 2015 10:00

Black Tot Day Master of Malt

The 31st July 1970 was the day on which the Royal Navy issued the final ever daily rum ration, or daily tot. To commemorate the end of this naval tradition, observed for over three centuries, we're offering Free Shipping* on all orders containing Pusser's or Rumbullion! rums, or indeed the Black Tot Last Consignment, up until midnight (BST) Friday 31st July.

That includes Pusser's 'Gunpowder Proof' Black Label, the new rebranded name (introduced in 2014) for their classic 54.5% British Navy rum. Previously known as Blue Label, that name is now reserved for a brand new 40% offering, the reason being that 40% abv is the maximum strength you can actually send to military bases these days, including naval bases and mess bars. Got all that? Excellent. Feel free to scoot off now and start filling your basket up with delicious rum as well as anything else you fancy free shipping on in the same order, but if you can contain that instinct for just a few moments longer then herein lies a brief history of the tot...

Master of Cocktails Candy Apple Jack Hammer

It's the return of #MasterofCocktails! And there are a few changes to the format... We're going to be making this a much less step-by-step affair - in return though, you'll be getting more advanced, exciting recipes, with more focus on presentation and garnish. We're also moving to once a fortnight, although still at the usual time of 6pm Sunday on twitter and on the blog the very next day.

50cl Handmade Cocktail Company 2015

The Handmade Cocktail Company's range of Pre-Bottled Cocktails has had a bit of a shake-up! From today, the entire 2015 selection will be available in 50cl bottles alongside the award-winning 70cl editions that were first launched over four years ago.

As well as updated recipes, there's also a brand new addition for 2015 - another graduate from the Experimental Series: The Boulevardier! Do you enjoy a delicious Negroni? How about a classic Manhattan? Well if you answered yes to either or both of those questions then you'll love The Boulevardier, made with top quality bourbon with a very high rye content, a blend of sweet vermouths and classic bitter apéritif. That said, if you like a Negroni or Manhattan, they're available from The Handmade Cocktail Company too!

An ISC Trophy for Master of Malt's #WhiskySanta!

by Whisky Santa     9. July 2015 14:30

Master of Malt #WhiskySanta ISC

Oh ho ho! What do we have here? An International Spirits Challenge Trophy, for me? Why it's like Christmas in July! Although, for the avoidance of doubt, not at all like the choas of the film "Christmas in July" (which is one of my favourites). Mrs. Claus tells me I need to stop mentioning 1940s cinema, as it'll stop me being "down with the kids", but now I have a Digital and Social Trophy! How much more hip and with it can you get?

Specifically, the trophy is for the Best Digital and Social Media Campaign in the spirits industry during the last year. A huge accolade and one that myself, Father Pugmas, the reindeer, Mrs. Claus and of course all of the Chaps at Master of Malt are enormously proud of.

Kininvie Special Release To Mark Distillery's 25th Anniversary

by Jake Mountain     8. July 2015 12:00

Kininvie Special Release

Almost exactly a year after we told you about Kininvie single malt's UK launch (along with some information on the distillery and too many 12 Monkeys references), we have some news of further releases for you.

Celebrating the 25th anniversary at the weekend, three casks that were filled on day one, quarter of a century ago, were selected by Brian Kinsman. Three casks for three markets: the UK, Europe and Taiwan. Collectively named "Special Release #1" or "the first drops", three unique single cask, cask strength Kininvie bottlings are planned for release between November 2015 and February 2016. This continues the theme of keeping the distillery's single malt output limited and 'special', however we don't yet know whether these will be in the half-sized 35cl bottles. We'll keep you posted.

Calais Strike Causing Delays on European Orders

by Master of Malt     2. July 2015 13:14

Calais Strike Operation Stack

There are strikes in Calais. You probably know all about it from that television programme 'The News', or else read about about it online. It's not just folk breaking into UK-bound lorries which is the problem though - MyFerryLink workers walked out on Monday, closing the port of Calais. For the last few days Operation Stack has had to turn 30 miles of the M20 into a car park to accommodate all the lorries that haven't been able to get across to mainland Europe. And it's just possible that your parcel is in one of these lorries. Or, if you're placing your order now, that there will be a slight delay.
