Around The World In 80 Drams - Week 4 - Zuidam

by Sam Smith     18. September 2015 16:30

Baarle Nassau

Welcome to another edition of Around The World In 80 Drams, where we are continuing to explore distilleries from the Netherlands. Last week we took a look at Lucas Bols in Amsterdam and their long history with distilling. Today we’ll be heading south to visit another well-known Dutch distillery, one that uses windmills to mill the barley to make their whisky - yes, we’re looking at Zuidam!

The Zuidam distillery is situated in Baarle-Nassau, about 60 miles south of Amsterdam. As I mentioned last week, it would take me around one and a half hours to travel between the two by pelican going full pelt, with their top speed being 40 mph. If I was lucky the pelican would carry me in its big beak like that scene in that fish movie.

Become a Judge in the Battle of the Blends 2015!

by Jake Mountain     9. September 2015 09:00

Battle of the Blends Whisky Magazine

UPDATE: Following huge demand, all Judging places have now been filled!

Whisky Magazine readers will know all about the Battle of the Blends already, but for those who haven't had the pleasure of perusing their glossy pages over the last few months, it's "a truly legendary contest... a test of skill, ingenuity and the sternest of palates" as Dave 'The Rummager' Broom and Neil 'Copper Dog' Ridley go toe to toe!

The eight rounds of blending, in accordance with the Marquis of Ridley rules (see below), have taken place and it's now time for the all important judging! Excitingly, as we've been working on this alongside Whisky Mag, this means that there's an opportunity for you to be one of the esteemed judges in this battle royale, an undertaking that will involve receiving and tasting delicious whisky. Sorry about that.

Public Voting Open Now! - IWSC Online Retailer of the Year Award

by Jake Mountain     2. September 2015 14:32

IWSC Online Retailer

Readers of this blog and those who follow us on social media will know that we've been fortunate enough to win an astonishing number of awards over the last few years, many of them retailer awards within and even beyond the drinks industry. When we do, we always make sure to thank you all. Quite simply, without you - our customers - none of it would be possible.

Last year we were able to make the shortlist for Online Retailer of the Year Award at the International Wine & Spirit Competition as a direct result of your votes. We then went on to take home the inaugural Online Retailer Trophy, something we're incredibly proud of.

Around The World In 80 Drams - Week 2 - Adnams

by Sam Smith     28. August 2015 15:30

Southwold

Welcome back to my Around The World In 80 Drams journey, which kicked off last week from the East London Liquor Co., unsurprisingly in East London. I left you with something of a riddle at the end of the last post, leaving hints as to where I’m off to next: sun, sea, superb beer and how it would take me 23 hours to travel there by pug (pugs run at an average of 3-5 miles per hour). Of course, I’m off to Adnams in Southwold!

Now, when I said I’m bad at geography and that this series will help me learn things, I meant it. If you had asked me where Southwold was before I looked at a map, I’d have said it was somewhere near Southampton. “It’s got ‘South’ in the name and those two kind of sound similar, they’re probably right next to each other,” I believe were the words that went through my head. Well, it’s safe to say I’m learning already, as Southwold is a little bit more northerly than I thought.

Master of Cocktails Tasting Notes Reconstructed

Greetings one and all to another edition of #MasterofCocktails. If you didn't catch last week's instalment, you might not have seen that we're changing up how we do this - a much less step-by-step affair, though you'll be getting more advanced, exciting recipes, with more focus on presentation and garnish. This week we're going to be using the 'Beast of Dufftown', Mortlach single malt Scotch whisky.

An ISC Trophy for Master of Malt's #WhiskySanta!

by Whisky Santa     9. July 2015 14:30

Master of Malt #WhiskySanta ISC

Oh ho ho! What do we have here? An International Spirits Challenge Trophy, for me? Why it's like Christmas in July! Although, for the avoidance of doubt, not at all like the choas of the film "Christmas in July" (which is one of my favourites). Mrs. Claus tells me I need to stop mentioning 1940s cinema, as it'll stop me being "down with the kids", but now I have a Digital and Social Trophy! How much more hip and with it can you get?

Specifically, the trophy is for the Best Digital and Social Media Campaign in the spirits industry during the last year. A huge accolade and one that myself, Father Pugmas, the reindeer, Mrs. Claus and of course all of the Chaps at Master of Malt are enormously proud of.

Kininvie Special Release To Mark Distillery's 25th Anniversary

by Jake Mountain     8. July 2015 12:00

Kininvie Special Release

Almost exactly a year after we told you about Kininvie single malt's UK launch (along with some information on the distillery and too many 12 Monkeys references), we have some news of further releases for you.

Celebrating the 25th anniversary at the weekend, three casks that were filled on day one, quarter of a century ago, were selected by Brian Kinsman. Three casks for three markets: the UK, Europe and Taiwan. Collectively named "Special Release #1" or "the first drops", three unique single cask, cask strength Kininvie bottlings are planned for release between November 2015 and February 2016. This continues the theme of keeping the distillery's single malt output limited and 'special', however we don't yet know whether these will be in the half-sized 35cl bottles. We'll keep you posted.

Talisker Skye in June

by Jake Mountain     30. June 2015 18:00

Talisker-Skye

Earlier this year Talisker added another no age statement whisky to its range: Talisker Skye. This means that whilst it may not be able to claim to be "the only Single Malt Scotch Whisky rugged enough to call the Isle of Skye its home" for too much longer (with progress continuing at Torabhaig), Talisker has found another way to cement the link between the distillery and its beloved, windswept home.

The Day of the Dalmunach

by Sam Smith     22. June 2015 09:49

Dalmunach Distillery

If you’ve long been wondering about what Chivas Brothers will be doing with the site of the Imperial distillery, which was mothballed in 1998, you can wonder no longer. Today, the 22nd of June 2015, the Dalmunach distillery will be officially opened by the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon.

Plans were put in place to construct the Dalmunach distillery back in 2012, and the stills were ready to be fired up in October of last year. With the capability of producing 10 million litres of spirit each year, Dalmunach will be supporting the continued growth of Chivas Brothers well known blends, like Chivas Regal, Royal Salute and Ballantine’s.
