Discounts on Bin-End Beers

by Master of Malt     18. May 2016 11:30

Bin-End Beer

Get up to 50% off beer that's approaching or past its Best Before date on our Bin-Ends page.

Hey, you know how beer has Best Before dates? Well, usually it's still fairly delicious even afterwards. With that in mind, we're going to start selling beers that have passed their Best Before date at a 50% discount as well as selling beers that are within a few weeks of their Best Before date at a 25% discount on our Bin-Ends page.

Let's back up for a second. What exactly is a Best Before date? Unlike Use By dates, Best Before dates are an indicator of quality, not safety. In theory they represent the date after which the manufacturer of a food or drink estimates that its 'premium quality' may start to deteriorate. In practice, with beers, they can be fairly arbitrary (and many beer fans would find bottling dates more helpful). What's certain is that they're not somehow 'good' the day before the Best Before date and then 'bad' immediately after it.

In the Beginning, There was Beer...

by Jake Mountain     2. March 2016 11:00

Ancient Egyptian Beer

We do beer now, as you'll no doubt know by now. That means we'll be writing about the delicious stuff here on the blog as well as all the new and exciting pages on the site. Where to start though? Well, how about at the very beginning? That's usually the best place.

My compulsion to start thousands of years ago may have something to do with my degree in Ancient History & Archaeology. It's not something I get to use daily as part of my employment in drinks retail*, but today's different. To trace the history of beer from the start you have to go right back into the ancient world, to the very birth of civilisation in fact...

We Do Beer Now!

Beer Master of Malt

That’s right, as you may have noticed we now have hundreds of delicious beers, from classic Trappist ales and Pilsners to craft IPAs, APAs, Porters and more! We've long admired the beer world, and the craft brewing movement in particular, and thought it was high time whisky’s brewed cousin was ‘properly’ represented on the site.

We are Master of Malt, after all…

Burns Night: Traditional vs. Untraditional

by Sam Smith     19. January 2016 17:04

Robert Burns

So. Burns Night. That’s next week. Burns Suppers date back to 1801, with the first one being held by friends of the celebrated Scottish poet Robert Burns. They’ve continued ever since, with people around the world enjoying haggis, poetry and whisky on the 25th of January. When something happens for over 200 years, sometimes people think about trying to do something a bit untraditional - like the year that Monkey Shoulder hosted a Burns night celebrating Montgomery Burns and Jake wrote a blog post mostly about a completely different TV show character.

Master of Cocktails - Spiced Ale Flip

Master of Cocktails Spiced Ale Flip

Right then ladies and gents - time for this week's #MasterofCocktails. A real winter warmer this week, superb for chilly climes. We are, of course, doing a Spiced Ale Flip recipe.

For this one, you'll be needing an unusual bit of barware - a fire poker. Keep it next to the strainer and the bar spoons.

Now this is really a very straight-forward recipe, which you can adapt at will. It all comes together very fast, with prep.

Ballantine's Want To Make #WhiskyEmoji Happen

by Sam Smith     6. August 2014 15:27

whisky emoji ballantines

They say a picture speaks a thousand words. If this is true, then emoji means you could write a novel in no time at all. If you’ve not got a clue what emoji are, they’re a selection of tiny little cartoons used mostly on mobile phones in texts, which range from the normal (dog, cat, car, etc…) to the frankly ridiculous (man in a bathtub, an aubergine, dollar bill with wings, etc…). Just looking at the assortment of little emoji on my phone now, I see a best-selling novel starting to appear…

Santa and one of the Queen’s Guards found a turtle near a volcano. They were happy and drove a tractor to a castle where they saw the head of the Statue of Liberty and a ghost. To celebrate they rode a horse into the city to enjoy a… whisky? But, but, but, but… There’s no whisky emoji!

Adnams Release Their First Ever Whiskies!

by Jake Mountain     5. December 2013 15:47

Adnam's Single Malt and Triple Grain whiskies

When asked if I fancied a trip to Southwold I didn’t have to do a lot of thinking. A chance to visit a lovely coastal town, get some fresh, sea air in my lungs, escape the madness of the festive season AND visit the fantastic Adnams distillery to taste two brand new English whiskies?!

Um, yes. I think I can probably manage that, at a push. So off I went to Waveney to meet up with Jonathan Adnams, Chairman and fourth-generation brewer, and Head Distiller John McCarthy for a bit of a shimmy around the distillery and to taste two new, unique whiskies prior to their release.

The first ever Adnams whiskies. Ever.

Meantime Brewery and the College Beer Club

by Michael Orson     12. August 2011 13:36
Meantime Brewery

We’ve long since been firm advocates of the Meantime Brewing Company, and it’s largely because they’ve had such great success in fighting against the rather dull mainstream of mass-produced lager that our nation is sadly awash with. Meantime focus heavily on quality and authenticity, shunning methods like pasteurisation, whilst making use of a minimum 28 day maturation period for all their beers. But despite all this attention to detail, one of the truly great things about the brewery is how prevalent their beer is; you can walk into Sainsbury’s and buy a bottle of their London Porter or IPA, and we love that. Beer and Whisky Pairing

Pairing Beer and Whisky

A bit of Blighty…

Most whisky drinkers don’t just drink whisky. A lot of us enjoy a G&T, or a good cocktail, or a glass of wine, and everyone loves our nation’s faithful, honest quaff… beer.

After a hard day’s toil wondering why they didn’t make Microsoft Office work properly, nothing beats a good pint at your local, or an icy cold bottle of beer on the couch.

The only thing is a glass of single malt is great too. But which do you choose? - a glorious pint or a warming glass of whisky? More...
