Whisky Advent Calendar

Ah yes, it’s that time of year once again when Drinks by the Dram reveal their selection of fantastic spirits-filled advent calendars!

The Entire Range is Now Available for Pre-Order here. (Estimated despatch late October.)

As well as all your favourites such as The Whisky Advent Calendar and Ginvent Calendar (from the dream team of Drinks by the Dram and Gin Foundry), which are both back for a fourth year, 2015 sees the range extended with a dedicated Bourbon Calendar plus Rum, Cognac, Armagnac, Tequila, Mezcal, Vodka, Absinthe and erm… Naga Chilli Vodka calendars (the latter getting hotter each day!)

Château de Castex Armagnac Master of Malt

So it may be gorgeous,
So it may not be famous,
Armagnac, twenty-one years old.

There’s a new release in the Master of Malt Single Cask Series charts, and the artist isn’t even Scottish! In fact, it’s not even whisky. (We do have some more Single Cask whiskies on the way shortly though… and not necessarily all from Scotland…) Extending the range into different spirit types entirely, we’re delighted to present our very first independent bottling of Armagnac!

Auchentoshan Three Wood

They say that when things come in threes, they’re all the more pleasing for it. That’s the rule of three. If today’s anything to go by then ‘they’ may well be on to something, as the 3cl dram in our Whisky Advent Calendars is a delicious Lowland single malt which is distilled three times and matured in three different types of cask (ex-Pedro Ximénez, bourbon and Oloroso)!

So I trust you’ll enjoy your Auchentoshan Three Wood, and why not also make the most of my treats below for Day 9 (that’s three threes, by the way).

Ho ho ho! (<-See, pleasing.)

World Whiskies 2014 Awards

So – it’s that time of year again.

Last week, we attended the Whisky Magazine World Whiskies Awards (and Icons of Whisky), and came away with a slew of trophies and awards to show for another year’s hard work.

First things first – we’re absolutely delighted to announce that we’ve retained our crown as ‘World’s Best Online Whisky Retailer’ for the third year on the trot. An absolutely fabulous achievement which we’re immensely proud of. We’ve said this before (and will keep on shouting it from the rooftops) but our site remains the only purpose-built online whisky shop coded from the ground up. It took an extraordinary amount of effort to build something that wasn’t based on a standard e-commerce platform, and we’re all hugely proud of the software stack we’ve built.

Master of Cocktails Eggnog cocktail

Last week, we gave you the choice between a classic summer cocktail or something more wintery and, overwhelmingly, the good people of twitter voted for a winter #MasterofCocktails option. So, last night we made the ultimate Eggnog!

The clocks had just gone back and the #UKStorm2013 was approaching so it did indeed seem the perfect time to batten down the hatches and mix up a classic winter warmer whilst we waited for all this to blow over.

The entire recipe can be found below, and apologies that it’s been posted slightly later than usual – the bloody storm has evidently even affected our blog posts!

On to the ‘nog!

So – we’ve been doing our Drinks by the Dram whisky sample service for almost a year now, and in that time have decanted ‘loads’ of 700ml bottles into 30ml samples.

700 divided by 30 is 690, so even if one is slightly generous with the 30ml measure, there’s still going to be a little drop or two left over.

My original plan (and I thought it was a darned good one) was to save all of this up, and make some awesome cocktails at the staff Christmas party, or maybe do something at the directors’ joint birthday party, but it turns out that “a little drop or two” multiplied by “loads” is about 37 full-sized bottles-worth.

Even we aren’t that thirsty.

Domaine Boingnères

Today we were greeted with a very exciting little parcel, containing a selection of samples of vintage Armagnacs from Domaine Boingnères.

Before we begin the tasting, here’s some brief history…

Founded by Jean Boingnères in 1807, the company is now run by the family’s sixth generation. In 1953, the house style changed when Léon Lafitte took the helm. Mr Lafitte enlarged the vineyards, and he began to sell the company’s Armagnac to some of France’s top restaurants, a move which increased Boingnères’ popularity massively.
