Diageo Special Releases 2016

Diageo Special Release 2016

The 2016 Special Releases are available for Pre-Order now and we tasted them all last night, including the oldest ever Port Ellen!

When it comes to whisky releases, Diageo’s aptly named annual Special Releases always attract plenty of excitement each year. This year’s selection including whiskies from Port Ellen, Brora, Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Glenkinchie, Cragganmore, Linkwood, Auchroisk, Mannochmore and Cambus distilleries, all of which (at the time of writing) are available to Pre-Order!

One thing you may notice, is that we’re not going to be doing our lotteries or charity auctions for any of these, as we have for some other exciting releases this year, and there’s a simple reason for that. Unlike the situation we had with the Yamazaki Sherry Cask, for example (or will have shortly with a certain collection of American whiskeys), Diageo have endeavoured to price the rarer releases at their ‘market value’. That’s why the prices went up so quickly a couple of years back as they bridged the gap before more or less levelling out (this year’s Port Ellen, from ever-depleting supplies, is £100 more than last year, an increase of around 4%, whereas there had been increases of 100% in recent years).

Lottery & Auction: Wolfburn Inaugural Special Edition

Wolfburn Lottery and Auction

We’re splitting our allocation of Wolfburn Inaugural Special Edition single malt whisky between a bottle lottery, an auction (with anything over RRP donated to our nominated charity Malaria No More UK) and a 3cl dram lottery. See the timeline below for when all this is going down.

Back in March we introduced a new solution for limited releases (you can read that post for a lot more information on the ‘why?’). It’s now time to put that into practice once again, this time for the Wolfburn Inaugural Special Edition. Just 875 bottles were produced, with only 100 available in the UK, and the whiskies used were selected by Distillery Manager Shane Fraser from some of the very first casks filled back in early 2013. Some liquid history from the new northernmost distillery on the Scottish mainland!

So, what to do with the 6 bottles – for which there’s sure to be huge demand – that we now have available having received our full allocation and updated our auction system?

Discounts on Bin-End Beers

Bin-End Beer

Get up to 50% off beer that’s approaching or past its Best Before date on our Bin-Ends page.

Hey, you know how beer has Best Before dates? Well, usually it’s still fairly delicious even afterwards. With that in mind, we’re going to start selling beers that have passed their Best Before date at a 50% discount as well as selling beers that are within a few weeks of their Best Before date at a 25% discount on our Bin-Ends page.

Let’s back up for a second. What exactly is a Best Before date? Unlike Use By dates, Best Before dates are an indicator of quality, not safety. In theory they represent the date after which the manufacturer of a food or drink estimates that its ‘premium quality’ may start to deteriorate. In practice, with beers, they can be fairly arbitrary (and many beer fans would find bottling dates more helpful). What’s certain is that they’re not somehow ‘good’ the day before the Best Before date and then ‘bad’ immediately after it.
