Glenlivet Launch Peated Cask Nàdurra After Claiming Top Spot

by Jake Mountain     2. October 2015 10:30

Glenlivet Nadurra Peated

This summer saw The Glenlivet overtake Glenfiddich to become the best selling single malt Scotch whisky in the world, having enjoyed +11% net sales growth in the last financial year. The gap had been steadily closing for a long time and this follows The Glenlivet's milestone of selling over a million nine litre cases in a year by last September.

In September of this year they also began work on another *huge* expansion project at the distillery, doubling the capacity to 21 million litres(!), which will make it the largest malt whisky distillery in Scotland. It was only back in 2010 that the capacity was increased from 6 million to 10.5 million litres, an increase that was larger than the capacity of most distilleries. When Pernod Ricard-owned Chivas Brothers stated that their mission was to make The Glenlivet the number one single malt back in 2004, it seemed extremely ambitious (at the time Glenfiddich outsold them around 2:1). Their growth, especially in the last five years, has been nothing short of astonishing.

Glenlivet Nàdurra First Fill Selection

Glenlivet Nàdurra First Fill Selection whisky

A little while back I received a sample of Nàdurra First Fill Selection only to get all full of horrible cold when the time came to taste it. Hmph. After recovering from this particular malady, I then promptly succumbed to some kind of debilitating manflu straight away! (But that's another story, with another untasted sample staring at me throughout, goading me to get better. Or at least recover the sense of smell...)

Fortunately, between these two bouts of sub-optimum health (during which I was ejected from MoM towers as they rightly feared I'd infect the populous) I did at least manage to find some time to try this new Glenlivet! It's also now in stock and available to buy, so it seems like a good time to pop some thoughts on the ol' blog.

The Glenlivet Nàdurra Oloroso

The Glenlivet Nadurra Oloroso

The Glenlivet is one of most popular single malts in the world, selling around 11 million bottles a year (they’re second only to Glenfiddich in terms of overall sales) and is owned by Chivas Brothers (i.e. Pernod Ricard). It is perhaps because of these facts that Nàdurra was such a welcome addition back in 2006 – here was a very big player willing to extoll the virtues of bottling whisky at cask strength without using chill filtration, or adding caramel (Nàdurra being the Gaelic for ‘natural’). It was also (and still is) matured exclusively in first-fill Bourbon barrels, with the batch number displayed on the bottle. The fact that it was/is a great whisky helped too, of course.

Fast forward to 2014 and The Glenlivet are giving the Nàdurra range a bit of a shake up with new permanent editions. Why only release a bourbon cask edition when they’re filling spirit into other cask types? And so, last night, I came to be in front of a glass of The Glenlivet Nàdurra Oloroso, matured exclusively in first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks from Jerez. This first batch is bottled at 48% and will be available exclusively in travel retail (just as the first ever Nàdurra was back in 2005), but the real cask strength deal should be available around September/October time. Suffice to say we’ll be stocking it as soon as we can! Excluding the Rare Single Cask Editions (which were second-fill), this will be the first exclusively Sherry cask matured Glenlivet “in living memory”. And it’s a Nàdurra. If you’re thinking “that’s pretty fucking cool” right about now, then you, Sir, are correct.
