Teeling Whisky Advent

We’re at day 10 of #WhiskyAdvent – double digits! Let’s tuck into a tasty Irish whiskey and watch in fear as something meaner than the Grinch approaches…

We made it to the 10th day of December! Good job, everyone! An achievement like this calls for high fives, mince pies and another brilliant whisky from Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar. Crack open window #10 and see what hides behind it!

Today we’re going to be enjoying a dram of Irish single malt whiskey from Teeling! A fantastic expression, made with a whiskeys finished in five different types of wine cask, including Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy and Cabernet Sauvignon. Whisky Advent 2016 Day 9: Old Perth Sherry Cask

Old Perth Whisky Advent

Day 9 of #WhiskyAdvent brings a well-Sherried blended malt to the Christmas table…

It’s already December 9th – there’s only 16 days until Christmas! That’ll either fill you with cinnamon-spiced Christmas cheer or complete and unmitigated panic, depending on how prepared you are. Either way, the days continue to fly by, indifferent to how many presents you’ve bought or Christmas puddings you’ve stockpiled, meaning we’re already at day 9 of #WhiskyAdvent!

Behind window #9 of Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar hides a dram of Old Perth Sherry Cask from Morrison & MacKay. A tasty blended malt, made with whisky drawn from Sherry hogsheads, butts and puncheons, and named after the city of Perth in Scotland. Let’s have a taste…

Whisky Advent 2016 Day 8: Lagavulin 16 Year Old

Lagavulin Whisky Advent

What deliciousness does day 8 of Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar bring? A coastal classic comes this way…

A new week of #WhiskyAdvent starts and Drinks by the Dram kicks it off with another absolutely smashing dram behind window #8 of their Whisky Advent Calendar. We’ve heading to the south coast of Islay for a massively, marvellously peaty expression…

Window #8 hides a dram of Lagavulin 16 Year Old, a much-admired whisky boasting medicinal peat notes by the festive-truck-load (FYI: a festive truck is similar to a regular truck, but it’s covered in tinsel). We recently had a good ol’ look at Lagavulin’s history as well as kicked off a competition to win a trip to the distillery, and there’s still time to get involved!

Whisky Advent 2016 Day 6: Rock Oyster

Rock Oyster Whisky Advent

For the sixth day of Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar, we get our hands on an incredible Island whisky and try our hardest to not make an easy B-52’s reference.

There’s fewer than 20 days left until Christmas Day arrives, and behind window #6 of Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar hides a brilliant blended malt from Douglas Laing. It’s Rock Oyster, made with whiskies from Scotland’s whisky producing-islands, including Orkney, Arran, Jura and Islay!

A terrific coastal tipple, boasting notes of sea breeze deliciousness by the bucketload, this Rock Oyster. It joined the Douglas Laing ‘Remarkable Regional Malts’ in 2015, and was followed by The Epicurean earlier this year. For a special Christmas treat, Sam has updated his imagination of the secret superhero group he invented when the Timorous Beastie was released!

Whisky Advent 2016 Day 5: Mackmyra Svensk Ek

Mackmyra Whisky Advent

We’ve arrived at day five of Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar, and we’re headed even further north than yesterday!

The first Monday of December featured plenty of frost and the arrival of the MoM Towers Christmas tree – it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… It’s also the day we find out what’s behind window #5 of the Drinks by the Dram Whisky Advent Calendar! Today, it’s the scrummy Svensk Ek from Mackmyra!

The first whisky distilled outside of Scotland in the Whisky Advent Calendar, Mackmyra’s Svensk Ek features whisky matured in casks made from oak grown on Visingsö, an island in Lake Vättern. This is where the name comes from – ‘Svensk Ek’ is Swedish for ‘Swedish Oak’. The oak was originally going to be used for shipbuilding, and while boats are pretty cool, we think whisky casks are a much cooler use for it!

Whisky Advent 2016 Day 4: Wolfburn Single Malt

Wolfburn Whisky Advent

Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar heads north for day four with a dram from a new distillery…

We love when a new distillery opens up, as it means more people getting their hands (metaphorically and literally) dirty and making new whisky for us to enjoy. Hence why the dram behind window #4 of Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar is particularly exciting – it’s from Scotland’s northernmost mainland whisky distillery, Wolfburn!

Wolfburn Single Malt was released earlier this year, and was an eagerly awaited expression, being their first widely available whisky since beginning distilling in 2013. Let’s tuck in!

Whisky Advent 2016 Day 2: Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Solera

Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Whisky Advent

Time to tear open window #2 of Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar!

Today is Day 2 of Whisky Advent 2016, so let’s go right ahead and dig in to the whisky that is sitting behind window #2 of Drinks by the Dram’s Whisky Advent Calendar, which is… Glenfiddich 15 Year Old Solera!

This Speyside single malt features plenty of the Christmas-y whisky notes that we all want to enjoy on winter evenings (nutmeg, orange, fruitcake) after its maturation in Sherry and new oak casks, which is then followed by a period in a solera vat. Their solera vat has been kept half full since 1998, providing on ongoing conversation between the spirit.
