Dark Lager / Schwarzbier

Examples of dark lagers include German Schwarzbier (literally ‘black beer’) and Dunkel (meaning ‘dark’ - also used as a descriptor for other German beer types) as well as the Czech Tmavý. Whilst flavour profiles can vary (even within these named examples), they’re all lagers made with dark malts. You can usually expect some roasted flavour (but nothing like a porter or stout) and depth but also the overall refreshing character of other lighter lagers and associated noble hop bitterness and aroma.
