The nose is of medium-body with a distinct nutty note. There are hints of fruit and dry wood, a citrus character and a little barley. The palate is of medium-body with good balance. There are notes of berry fruits, hints of cut fruit salad and caramel. The finish is quite short with a touch of oak and spice.

I got this scotch in mistake for a Jamie in a curry house. I knew it was not Jamie, but was not put off cos curious about whiskey and all other drinks. It was lighter to the eye and smoky on the tongue. I have routinely rejected all blended scotches since discovering single malts but this drew me up short. Bought a bottle in duty free to take stock. An eye opener.I may float into old age with a cheaper habitWhat is not to like.Fintan

Look, this is a bottom shelf scotch in terms of price but it's really rather light and pleasant. I'm sipping it over ice now, its 31c outside so the ice is essential. It has its own distinct character - floral, citrus - and that may appeal to your palette, or it may not. I keep a bottle and go to it when I want a break from the heavier smokier, sherried stuff and bourbons (my natural preference). I think 3.5 is about right. Drinkable.

i usually drink single malts such as glenlivit 12 or glenfiddich 12. i wanted to give this a try and i was really surprised how much i liked it! Sure its not as smooth but it has a nice flavour. Dont let the price stop you from trying this.

I would like to give some of you reviewers a blind taste test. J&B will stand up to Dewar's, or any blended Scotch Whisky. Single malts are definitely better, and some of you snobs probably only buy them. But J&B was THE SCOTCH in the 50s, 60s, and 70s in this country, whether you were rich, or not. I just paid $24 for a bottle, and it is very smooth and tasty straight or with a little ice. That's good enough for my money.

As soon as I opened it, it smelled like tequila and tasted like tequila but didn't mess with my stomach like tequila. It's good with Coke and lemon or Mellow Yellow but not straight.
10th January 2015
I like it with a good bit of soda and a twist of lemon. Good warm weather drink. It's light with a slight citrus/ fruit aroma.

one of the worst whisky ever made, made for mixing so you do not taste this foul drum

My favorite blended scotch. Has a nice little bite at the end.I like it better than Johnnie Walker Red, Dewar's, and Chivas Regal(expensive rotgut in my opinion). Take a Mello Yello soda add two measures of J&B. Very nice drink Call it a Mellow Scotsman

This one has stood the test of time. I find it to be crisp, refreshing and elegant yet simple (and I mean simple in a very good way). As long as they don't go crazy with the amount of caramel colouring, this one should continue to be a reliable blend for eternity! I agree completely with one reviewer here: I prefer this over some single malts too. Much depending of course on my mood, wallet etc etc

This is the blended scotch with the best "nosing" ever to me... astonishing complex and various aromas - take a nosing glas and try it. Quality is "upper middle class" of young blended Scotch, much less added caramel like in J.W. Red Label, Grants, oder Hankey Bannister , but still not on the level of B&W and Vat69... It has a pleasantly light&sweet taste without the typical rough-bitternes of grain whisky... and the blend isnt boring at all, even if goes down so well...I prefer it over many cheap Single Malts... if you more into "Speyside-Style" J&B is the Blend for you... its very easy to drink, even in summer. and I thinks thats why it is so popular in Spain, Italy, France etc.

Why is it so difficult to find J&B on sale in the UK but it is available from supermarkets in France & Belguim?
18th June 2014
I took a slip off of one if my friends bottles but before I ever take a drink I smell it first and it smelled like tequila and I don't really like tequila then I took a swig of it and it tasted like tequila is that normal

I find this blend to be light and refreshing! I taste light citrus, minimal floral and a hint of smoky peat. I do prefer deeper layered blends, and I find Chivas Regal to be a little richer in taste. I really enjoy a single malt on the rocks with a splash of ice water! The J&B experience is light-hearted in comparison!

Now, I don't have as much of a cultured palate, and I'm not as armed with the whisky vocabulary as most of the people here, but I'm not quite sure I'd drink this neat. The nose was quite inviting as it smelled refreshing, but I didn't appreciate it in my mouth. It reminded me of those gummy bears that I'd soak in gin for a day before eating. But hey! It's really great with rootbeer or cream soda!-M.G. (MNL, Philippines)

What has happened to this old blend, used to be a nice blend with all the qualities you'd expect.... But I've just had a dram of a new batch...... YUCK....to light and to floral with a very strong vanilla finish, there are far superior blends on the shelf for the same price...... I hope they find the error of their ways and get it sorted.

its like a dogs cock soaked in good a good malt ok but you don't want it

This is one of the Best compare to brands even more expensive and surely over rated. I recommend J&B Rare to lovers and amateurs who would like to experiment a smooth and tasty blend of Scoth and Wiskey
7th January 2014
If you like Glenlivet, this is a steal in the States, where it sells for $20. Glenlivet sells for about $40. J and B is half the price and just as nice.

If it's good enough for R.J. MacReady when he's trying to cope with a shape shifting alien at sub zero temperatures, it's good enough for me.

J&B Rare is a great tasting blend. Quite friendly with fruity gentle flavour. It goes particularly well with ginger ale.
3rd August 2013
This is a good blend, basically its like a slightly better, more refined version of Bells.
31st May 2013
A petite scotch. If you like overpowering smokiness this isn't for you. It is for those liking a good tasting whiskey that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. In this price range you can't beat it.
1st May 2013
OK. It's not one tasting like an ash tray or smoked dirt. It's a light tasting scotch. It tastes good. I can't for the life of me think why it gets such a bad rap. It is not overpowering or harsh. It goes down smoothly and has a floral note to the taste. Not a long finish but it's good.
This one is an old classic of a blend; as long as they don't go crazy with the caramel colouring!! J and B Rare should be crisp and fresh. Whats that old sayin'?..Oh, yeah, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it."
1st March 2013
Even cheap Cluny is better.
29th November 2012
Why pay more for less? This is a good quality Scotch and personally feel if you pay a premium for a single malt your are being foolish. Comparable in quality (not flavor) to Dewars.
10th November 2012
It's bad as far as whiskey goes, but it's still better then most blends out there(J Walker, Ballantines) I would go for Vat 69 or Grant's FR. but beside those it's the best in it's price range
20th October 2012
Reasonable price for a great blended scotch. Great drink that does not kick your head the day after.
5th March 2012
Very good for the price. People who like to drink Scotch frequently butwant to economies of every day things.
27th January 2012
Truely the best scotch on the market, as in this is not a malt fantastic as a long drink with a mixer or truely delicious on it's own and I don't like scotch!!!

29th November 2010
as i write this i am sipping this delightful concoction. J&B have made a very smooth drink for those with a balanced palet. For the money i paid this hastruly surprised me, after some bad choices in the past....Grants scotch whisky to name one. I would rate this up with Teachers highland cream as one of the best blended Scotches for ones money. Buy and enjoy...Responsibly!!!
