Whisky or Whiskey

Insider knowledge: Kilchoman Machir Bay 2013 whisky is named whisky by virtue of the fact it's from Scotland. If distilled in America the spelling would be Kilchoman Machir Bay 2013 whiskey, as opposed to whisky.

Produced at the artisan farm distillery Kilchoman, Machir Bay 2013 is a delicious vatting of five year old bourbon-matured whisky, and four year old bourbon-matured and Oloroso-finished malt. Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: A smoky, smouldering nose with sticking plasters, marmalade, lemon zest and hints of white wine.

Palate: Sherried and oaky palate with notes of cracked black pepper, butterscotch and apple peel. Cocoa butter, star anise and peat smoke.

Finish: A long, spiced finish. Hints of iodine and cassis.

Overall: A rich, intense whisky with a great deal of complexity.

User Reviews of the Kilchoman Machir Bay 2013

Running wind sprints between goal posts

while more mature whisky (like a Bunna Toiteach) is jogging laps around the field. Unmistakeably green, notably shallow in profile but who gives a rip? What it does well - the welterweight smoke and brine uppercut to the jaw - it performs with such enthusiasm, it stands on its own. Do experiment both neat and varying additions of water, as well as time standing before drinking and resting the dram. Again, not complex but we know that going in. A young stallion coming of age and eyeing the mares...enjoy the swagger.

Nostalgic note of....vintage doll?

Kilchoman's Machir Bay is the distillery's lovely and subtle core expression. The nose offers strong peat and yeasty biscuit notes, followed by an intense green apple sweetness that reminded me of those scented Strawberry Shortcake dolls of the 1980s. (Indeed, after conducting a bit of internet research, I discovered there was an apple-based character named Apple Dumplin', so we'll go with that.) Sweet flavors dominate the palate, soft and substantial, like rich angel food cake with sugary icing. The finish is long and spicy-sweet with an afterburn of cinnamon red-hots.

This is really good. I'm new to the whisky scene. I am a big fan of Islay and this is something special. Peaty smokey sweet spicy salty. Will keep a bottle of this handy at all times for the foreseeable future.

Got a bottle today and it is my current favorite, excellent stuff with a lovely smoky peat note balanced with sweet fruit and pepper . Deffinetly up there with the other islay giants. Great stuff and will deffinetly be buying an other bottle.
