Rum - Golden - 2013
International Wine & Spirit Competition
Nose: Sweet, toffee, vanilla, spices, oak. Hints of smoke.
Palate: Cocoa, caramel, prunes, spices, vanilla.
Finish: Long, sublimely smooth, hints of smoke on the tail.
Sweet, eminently quaffable, superb finish. Perhaps a little less complex than Mount Gay XO, but overall a better rum.

Sorry to disagree with the crowd but found this harsh - too bitter for 12yr- much prefer Cruzan single barrel or aged, Appleton 12 or Extra, or many, many others. This was a big disappointment.

Complex but not difficult to drink. Really well balance but with its own unique character. Over ice is a treat.

this is one of the best sipping rums in my opinion.
not as smooth as the 15 or 21yr old or something like the Zacappa solera - but if you're having it over ice or with a dash of sparkling spring water i think it is far superior. If you were to offer me any of these at the same price i would still take the 12yr old. not sure i want to sing its praises too much or it will start selling out all over the shop...

Red-tinged gold. Quite a pungent nose, sweet but slightly vegetal - like an agricole, or Wray & Nephew, but only a hint. Quite fruity, like berries dipped in honey. Still lots of bite, peppery finish. Great - a good crossover from mixing to sipping.

When I was younger I read a description of a cold, wet child on a pirate ship being offered a sip of rum by a kindly sea-farer and feeling instantly warmed and cheered. This is the rum I imagine him drinking.
If you're going for a classic and beautiful rum - go no further. It may not be as cheap as the similarly flavoured, but sweeter, Doorly's XO but this is a more complex, richer and ultimately more satisfying dram, and worth the extra £10 is has on Doorly's - although Doorly's is a fine drink. Ultimately a superb purchase, I just wish a 70cl bottle would last longer.
