House Style
Huge in body, Arran makes thick, malty, and citrussy whisky.
A little bit about the distillery…
One of Scotland's most recent additions to its whisky arsenal, the Arran distillery was founded in 1993 by Harold Currie, a retiring managing director from stalwart Scotch brand Chivas. It stands as the only distillery on the Isle of Arran (there was once a distillery called Lagg, but it closed in 1837). The distillery is located in Lochranza and the island is a popular tourist destination. The buildings were styled traditionally and they sit neatly amid dramatic scenery.
The traditional look of the distillery, however, is a far cry from the modern style of whisky produced within…
Arran made its mark on the whisky world with its own brand of malty, citrussy Scotch. This hearty base formed a solid foundation for many a foray into the world of cask-finishing, and we've tasted exceptional (and unusual) malts from Arran including a Madeira cask finish and even a (sadly sold out) Jamaican rum finish.
As you may or may not know, we at Master of Malt are also independent bottlers, and we've had great success with a single cask 12 year old which offers the Arran house flavours with a big whack of zesty orange, coconut, and a hint of brine.
It's a stunner, and Jim Murray even went as far as awarding it 91.5 points (he describes whiskies scored with over 90 points as being “Brilliant!”
