Highland Single Malt Whisky

Single Malt from the Highlands takes on many shapes and forms. Because the region is so vast it is difficult to make sweeping statements. Typically, single malt from the region is put into four subregions, named for the cardinal compass points. To the north there are big bodied single malts, with cereal sweetness and richness, take The Dalmore, for example. Toward the south there are lighter, fruitier whiskies with a definite dryness. Aberfeldy is a shining example of this. To the east there are some full-bodied, dry whiskies with lots of fruit and pungency. The superb Glen Garioch is one such single malt distillery. The Western Highlands offer full body and real power with peaty, smoky overtones, nearer the coast there are some more maritime flavoured whiskies too. The most popular Highland single malt - if Speyside is treated as a separate region (Speyside, of course, is situated in the Highlands) - is Glenmorangie.

A 1998 vintage Edradour, at cask strength. This was finished in a Sassicaia wine cask - Italy's answer to Bordeaux. Just 461 bottles of this were released.  More info

This single cask was distilled at Edradour in 1996 and finished in a Barolo wine barrel from Angelo Gaja, a famed Italian wine producer from Piemonte, popular for Barolo and Barbesco wines.  More info
With the lovely pink hue of a whisky finished in red wine casks, this Edradour was distilled in 1998 and finished in a Bordeaux wine barrel.  More info

A 1976 vintage from Glenury Royal, this was bottled as part of Gordon and MacPhail's Connoisseurs Choice range.  More info
From Lombard's Jewels of Scotland range. This was distilled at Brora in 1982 and bottled in 2004. John Hansell of Malt Advocate rated it with a very high 95 points!  More info
A 24 year old Rare Malt, very rare as Brora closed in March of 1983. This was distilled in 1977 and released in 2001.  More info

A very rare Rare Malts bottling, from back in the day when whisky was bottled in 75cl bottles. This 23 year old is bottled at cask strength. Glen Ord is known for its big, malty, fragrant whiskies.  More info
A beautifully presented bottle from Royal Lochnagar. This is astonishingly rare, and each bottle is individually numbered. This is number 0618, from a release of 4,710, bottled in 2007.  More info
A rare, 30 year old cask strength dram from Brora. The Brora distillery has since been closed and is now used as a warehouse and visitor centre by adjacent distillery, Clynelish.  More info
