Vesper Cocktail 2013 Bottling Note

After the sight of their favourite sophisticated secret agent sipping a lager-beer last year led The Handmade Cocktail Company to write an open letter to Commander Bond, it is now time for their emergency Vesper to graduate from the Experimental Series and take its place as part of the full 70cl range!

The concept of the ‘Vintage Cocktail’ range is simple – you get all the ingredients for a superb cocktail pre-mixed, all you have to do is pour it over ice, stir (Don't shake - that would be madness - just don't tell him we said that), then strain off into your glass and garnish (in this instance with a twist of lemon). Each bottle carries a stamp showing its year of manufacture.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: The nose opens with a bouquet of heady juniper and zingy vodka with the floral dimension of the vermouth swiftly following.

Palate: The palate displays supreme elegance with the vodka laying a refreshing citrus quality on top of the delicate botanical balance of the gin, beneath this there is an underlying honeyed sweetness leading to drying notes of pine resin.

Finish: The finish retains floral juniper notes, with a hint of quinine bitterness, and lingers for a surprising long time with notes of juniper, cream and a slight herbaceousness.

Overall: The key to this cocktail is balance, the gin, vodka and vermouth play-off each other to create a sum greater than the total of their parts. It is easy to see why this cocktail is needed after a mission defending Queen and Country!

Although the Vesper originally calls for Kina Lillet, this product is no longer available as it has pretty much changed its name to Lillet Blanc. As a substitute, I have heard of people using Martini Bianco, as both are vermouths.

Curious?

I'm a 007 enthusiast and an avid Vesper drinker. Though I have not had this yet, I'm curious to try, but also hesitant. You see, the Vesper Bond drinks does not call for vermouth. I've spent years perfecting my at home Vesper. I'm pleased that quinine is mentioned though (I've had to use a dash of bitters for this). Of course I don't have Kina Lillet to use as Bond does, but I use Lillet Blanc which is a close substitute. I guess I'll just have to buy this and try, only way to find out.
