The landed gentry of Antigua have produced their own rums for centuries. Originally, this was done on an amateur, small-scale basis, though even then the Antiguan rums certainly had their own style. During the early 1900s, rum shops distilled and blended their own rums... and in 1932 a group of rum vendors amalgamated to form the Antigua Distillery. Two years later, the group acquired several estates as well as a plant to secure a stable supply of molasses for distillation. The Antigua Distillery produces several rums, including an aged rum. Toward the latter part of the 20th century, the global trend for consumers was leaning more toward light and white spirits. In accordance, the company started to produce Cavalier Antigua Rum – a much lighter rum. The brand sells a range of rums, both light and aged.
