A distillery known as Milton is founded by John and George Rate.
1837
The Rate brothers are registered as licensees of a distillery named Glenkinchie.
1840
James Gray takes over operations.
1852
John Rate is once again licensee.
1853
John Rate sells the distillery to a farmer Christie who converts it to a sawmill.
1881
The buildings are bought by a consortium from Edinburgh made up of wine merchants, whisky blenders and brewers.
1890
Glenkinchie Distillery Company is founded with Major James Gray as General Manager. Reconstruction and refurbishment is on-going for the next few years.
1914
Glenkinchie forms Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD) with four other lowland distilleries.
1925
Distillers Company Limited buys SMD.
1939
– Glenkinchie is one of few distilleries allowed to maintain production during the war.
1968
Floor maltings is decommissioned.
1969
The maltings is converted into a museum.
1988
Glenkinchie 10 years becomes one of selected six in the Classic Malt series.
1998
A Distiller’s Edition with amontillado finish is launched.
2007
A 12 year old and a 20 year old cask strength are released.
