Glencadam

In 1825, George Cooper founded the Glencadam whisky distillery. Angus Dundee acquired the distillery from Allied Domecq after it had been closed for three years. Glencadam was the second distillery the company had purchased, Tomintoul being the first. When Allied... mothballed Glencadam distillery at the turn of the millennium, it was left in superb condition. This allowed Angus Dundee to reopen it just two months after the acquisition. Prior to closure, the distillery had supplied whisky for Stewart’s Cream of the Barley blend; Glencadam uses very soft water and produces a 'creamy' single malt.

Glencadam lies a half mile from the River Esk and quenches its thirst from Loch Lee, at the River Esk's headwaters. The water is piped thirty miles to the distillery. The distillery runs at capacity, its two stills producing some 1.4 million litres annually. The spirit is matured in ex-bourbon casks onsite; Glencadam boasts eleven onsite warehouses. The distillery changed hands several times during the 19th century; Andrew Stevenson and Harry Southwell sold Glencadam to Hiram Walker in July of 1954 for the sum of £83,400 and five years later the company renovated the buildings.
