Glen Moray

Glen Moray was built on the site of the West Brewery to the west of Elgin on the banks of the River Lossie. Following reconstruction, Glen Moray Distillery was founded in 1897. It was not long before the distillery closed in 1910, though it reopened a couple of years later, shortly before closing once more. In 1920, Macdonald and Muir acquired the distillery and once more spirit flowed from the stills. The distillery operated its own floor maltings, converting to a Saladin Box in 1957, which remained in use until 1978. During the 1970s, the two original stills were replaced and two further stills were added, bring its total yearly capacity to two million litres.

Macdonald and Muir Ltd renamed itself Glenmorangie Plc and in 2004 the group was acquired by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy for the princely sum of £300 million. The Glenmorangie distillery pioneered exotic wood finishes and Glen Moray championed white wine finishes, releasing a Chardonnay finish and two Chenin Blanc finishes in 1999.

Most of the whisky from Glen Moray has long since been used in blended Scotch. Recently, the Glenmorangie Co decided to cease producing whisky for blending and subsequently, in 2008, the distillery was put up for sale. There are several official house bottlings, but independent bottlings are rather rare.

The distillery closes.

1912

The distillery reopens, but soon closes again.

1920

Financial troubles force the distillery to be put up for sale. Buyer is Macdonald & Muir.

1923

Production restarts.

1932

No whisky is produced this year.

1958

A reconstruction takes place and the floor maltings are replaced by a Saladin box.

1978

Own maltings are terminated.

1979

The number of stills is increased from two to four.

1992

Two old stills are replaced by new.

1996

Macdonald & Muir Ltd changes name to Glenmorangie plc.

1999

Three wood finishes are introduced - Chardonnay (no age) and Chenin Blanc (12 and 16 years respectively).

2004

Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy buys Glenmorangie plc for £300 million. A new visitor centre is inaugurated and 276 bottles of Glen Moray 1986 cask strength are released. A 20 and a 30 year old are released late in the year. Wood finishing ceases.

2005

The Fifth Chapter (Manager’s Choice from Graham Coull) is released.

2006

Two vintages, 1963 and 1964, and a new Manager’s Choice from Graham Coull are released.

2007

The second edition of Mountain Oak is released.

2008

The distillery is put up for sale.
