The Captain Morgan brand was created by the Seagram Company in 1944. A distillery was acquired in Jamaica and named Long Pond. Captain Morgan has become synonymous with spiced rum and their flavoured product was first fashioned in Kingston, Jamaica; the Levy family... owned a pharmacy and they would purchase unrefined rum from the Long Pond distillery which they would mix with herbs and spices to produce a supposedly ‘medicinal’ product. Seagram’s CEO, Samuel Bronfman, enjoyed the Levy family’s concoction and bought the rights for it. The US government wanted to boost employment in Puerto Rico and so created incentives for companies on the island. These incentives included a significantly reduced tax on Puerto Rican rum imported into the States. Seagram quickly took advantage of the scheme and built a factory near San Juan. Eventually, Seagram sold off the Captain Morgan brand to Diageo. The brand is named for Sir Henry Morgan, who was a privateer for the Welsh during the 1600s. Captain Morgan is the second largest spirits producer in the world.
