Maltstock 2012: A Dutch Odyssey with its own (Highland Park) Whisky

by Cat Spencer     22. April 2013 14:45

Maltstock 2012 Tasting Glass

Just before we officially launched ‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ in the UK (and beyond), we packed up the Mini Malt Mobile (aka Ben's car, complete with boxes upon boxes of Scotch whisky, suitcases, and a ukulele), piled in, and took to the motorways and Channel to get to Maltstock, a yearly whisky festival in the Netherlands.

Pitched as "the relaxed whisky weekend" it is—indeed—"relaxing". Akin to a summer camp for whisky enthusiasts, the weekend is packed with music, bonfires, whisky masterclasses, whisky-themed games, a whisky quiz, and a veritable overdose (if that can be said) of food and friends. This was our third year in attendance, and believe me, it lives up to the hype. By the end, we were all a bit like newborn fawns: blinking in the sun and staggering gingerly about the place. We've got a flock of photos below to give you, dear reader, a taste of some of the activities to be had. A picture is worth a thousand words, they say…

Filliers Distillery: “It’s in Belgium”

by Jake Mountain     19. April 2013 16:42

In Bruges

As Ian McCulloch certainly didn’t say:

We've been up to Filliers terrace,

To see what's a-happening...

They’re mixing up the medici-i-i-ine (Note – not medicine #drinkaware)

And we did like the taste!

The Filliers family have been making jenever near Deinze, not far from Ghent, for more than five generations dating back to the 19th century. More recently, they became the producers of the first double still Belgian whisky, and even more recently, Master of Malt made their fine products available in the UK retail market for the first time ever!

Zonder dank. (That’s Flemish for you’re welcome.)

The Flask from The Macallan: We have a winner!

by Jake Mountain     19. April 2013 10:02

The Macallan The Flask

Excellent work: many of you successfully infiltrated The Competition! You completed all of your objectives and only a bare minimum of innocent bystanders were horribly crushed to death during your tank shenanigans!

Caption Contest #4 – Win a bottle of Clynelish Whisky!

by Jake Mountain     12. April 2013 15:15

Clynelish Caption Contest

We thought it was high time we ran another caption competition (maybe we just felt like giving away some whisky), although this time with a bit of a twist… Where we found the original of this particular image however, I really don’t know.

Personally, I find it even more perturbing than C.M. Coolidge’s paintings of dogs playing poker. (“They’re dogs… and they’re playing poker…!”)

The Truth About Cocks’ Scotch Eggs

Disappointment

So... I guess we have to come clean about the simply astonishing work of Dr Brian Cocks and his coveted Scotch Eggs.

Cocks' Scotch Eggs

Inner Workings of a Chicken Still

After our many years in the wonderful business of whisky purveyance, it’s not often that we come across something that really takes us aback. Today, however, we have the rare honour of announcing a distilling phenomenon hitherto unknown: A heady blend of spirit and science, seasoned with a shake of quackery and a dose of credulity...

Exclusive Bottling - Balblair 1990 Peated Cask - MoM Exclusive

by Ben Ellefsen     20. March 2013 12:50

Balblair 1990 Peated Cask

It’s an exciting one, this...

It’s not often that we get involved with Exclusive, Single-Cask bottlings direct from the distilleries themselves, as there’s generally much better value to be had from independent bottlings. We do lots of them instead. Lots and lots.

Every now and then though, something comes along that wouldn’t usually be available on the independent market.

This is one such bottling. A (very, very rare) Peated Balblair. Well, I say that – it’s actually a Balblair that’s been stored in a cask previously used to hold Peated Whisky. Sort of Peated through the medium of cheating. A Cheaty-Peaty whisky if you will.

How To Blend Whisky Part II (Deux*)

by Jake Mountain     14. March 2013 15:00

Blend Your Own Whisky Part 2

Back in September, we began offering some pointers on blending your own whisky to help you get the most out of the marvellous Home Blending Kits we have bestowed upon the world (we’re good like that) as well as explaining a little about how whisky blending came about. Now, we left that post on a bit of a cliff-hanger I’m afraid but fear not! We didn’t forget about this, good heavens no! Time to re-cap/catch up on How To Blend Whisky Part I because herein lies... Part Deux!

The Best in Glass Awards 2012

by Cat Spencer     25. February 2013 12:00

For the past 5 years, drinks writers (and now whisky bottlers!) Joel Harrison and Neil Ridley have hosted an awards ceremony intended to turn the whisky judging world on its head—or at least put it poolside with a drink in its hand. Jeil (or Noel, as they are affectionately referred to at MoM HQ) designed their Best in Glass Awards to celebrate whiskies that are accessible, delicious, and newly released. The annual Best in Glass Awards were held on 12th December 2012 at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in London. After a gruelling afternoon of a two-course luncheon (wink!) and blind tasting of ten whiskies, one whisky emerged victorious from the collection to be dubbed the champion of the Best in Glass Awards 2012!
