Riedel Glassware – a tasting event

by Master of Malt     8. September 2010 16:16

Riedel Glassware - a tasting eventFor a long time now, we here at Master of Malt have been boring anyone who cares to listen senseless about the importance of good quality glassware (both for whisky and other drinks). We’re also (as you may have noticed) more than a little pernickety about detail, and like to do things ‘properly’.

It’s very heartening therefore, to find another company who are as obsessive about quality, and even more heartening to find out that they’re going to be running a tasting masterclass open to the general public (previously we’ve only encountered the team from Riedel at trade events).

For those of you who don’t know about Riedel, they are a company that make glassware (primarily wine glasses, but some for spirits and whisky too – more on that later in the year) to a standard that has to be seen to be believed. Riedel manufacture dozens and dozens of wine-glass varieties, all of which are tailored specifically to a particular region or grape varietal and painstakingly engineered to deliver the perfect size, shape and even angle of palette delivery for each individual style of wine. Thank you for entering; we all know it’s the taking part that counts, though in another more real way, we know that winning is everything.

With this in mind, we devised a complex scoring system, made a shortlist, and selected three winners. They are thus… More...

Okay, so once in a while at MoM towers, we like to make a brief foray into the wonderful (if dangerous) world of Mixology.

Over the next few months we’ll be publishing some reasonably detailed recipes of our favourite whisky cocktails for you to make at home – and this week’s instalment is the famous Blood and Sand.

Cocktail Making with a World Class Liqueur

by Michael Orson     5. August 2010 13:54
A green cocktail

A unique discovery was made some time ago in the world of booze; it was found that by mixing alcohol, sugar, and various flavourings of innumerable origin, a delicious concoction would be yours for the partaking. Safe in this knowledge, Edmond Briottet was founded in 1836 and the firm garnered a happy reputation thanks to its great success with Cassis and a variety of liqueurs. In fact, Briottet boasts a tremendous catalogue of liqueurs made with an extraordinary selection of fruits, nuts and even seeds!

We were naturally keen to stock as many as we could, so the other day a shipment arrived at the MoM underground lair. We watched it trundling along the mineshaft from the super-secret helipad and there, before us, was a veritable rainbow of créme de this, and liqueur de le bloomin’ that. More...
