Vintage Cocktails

It’s a trend we’ve seen emerging for many years, that of bartenders mixing their own versions of the Manhattan, Rob Roy, and other Classic cocktails, then bottling them and simply leaving them alone to mature (sometimes for many years) before stirring and serving.

We’ve sampled absolutely superb examples at (in our opinion) a couple of the best bars in the world; 69 Colebrook Row and Purl, and are seeing the trend spread out into more and more cocktail bars throughout the UK.

Whilst Bottle-aged cocktails are appearing in tremendously forward thinking bars these days, they are also a revival of techniques used by infamous pre-prohibition bartenders such as Thomas Handy in the early 1900s. Handy, famous for the invention of the Sazerac Cocktail is recorded to have pre-bottled his potent mixture of liquor to serve to patrons in the renowned Merchants Exchange Coffee House, New Orleans. More...

Our First Whisky Tasting

Our First Whisky Tasting

We ran our first official in-house whisky tasting last Thursday and all-in-all it was a rip-roaring success!

The tasting, led by Darren Rook – our tastings manager - was all about the Scotch regions, and the extraordinary variation there is in whisky from different parts of Scotland. Beginning with the lightest/gentlest whisky first, we journeyed (figuratively) to the Lowlands, with a single cask 19 year old Rosebank no less!

This was followed by the lower strength version of our single cask Tomatin 19 year old (Stephen Fry’s favourite whisky!), which offered up a fantastic array of barley, zest and malty sweetness.

Next was a charming Speysider: a 1987 BenRiach, bottled by Gordon and MacPhail. The refill American hoggie maturation resulted in a spicy, biscuity dram with oodles of creamy vanilla on the palate.More...

Glenlivet 70 Year Old 1940

We’ve just received word of something very noble from the renowned whisky merchants and bottlers Gordon and MacPhail.

The legendary Scottish brand has been trading with Japan for decades and they’ve very generously donated bottle No. 1 of Glenlivet 70 Year old 1940 to help raise money for the Japanese relief effort. The bottle will be sold at Bonhams Auction House in Glasgow, and all funds raised will be given to the Red Cross, who are doing all they can to help the Japanese in the aftermath of one of the most devastating natural disasters in recent history. Shackleton's Whisky

Last year there was an astonishing discovery in Antarctica, just outside of what was once Ernest Shackleton’s hut. The discovery was several cases of Mackinlay’s Rare Old Highland Malt whisky, which had been left behind after a failed attempt to reach the South Pole between 1907 and 1909.

Whyte and Mackay, who own the Mackinlay’s brand, leapt at the incredible opportunity to try and recreate a whisky from a bygone era, under the lead of their inimitable Master Blender, Richard Paterson.

"It's a beautiful colour. It's that lovely rich golden colour and what's more important at this early stage, it's beautifully clear.” Richard describes the whisky, adding: "It's telling you that it's not contaminated -- that's very important." More...

Bourbon Tasting

After a busy few days meeting the great and the good from the whisk(e)y world, we were invited up to the London Cocktail Club for an astonishing bourbon tasting, led by Preston Van Winkle. All in all, it was the perfect end to the week.

Before we began the tasting, Preston talked us through the history of Van Winkle...

The company was founded by Preston’s great grandfather, Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle Senior. During the late 19th Century, Pappy worked as an itinerant salesman for W.L. Weller & Sons (a whiskey company based in Louisville, Kentucky), selling bourbon from a horse and cart.

In 1910, he bought the A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery (which made the whiskey for W.L. Weller), and with it he gained control of the W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald, Rebel Yell and Cabin Still brands – the four horsemen More...

The Glenlivet 70 Year Old – The World’s Oldest Whisky (Mk 2)

Those good ol’ boys at Gordon and Macphail have done it again – they’ve release another ‘the world’s oldest whisky’…

Following on from the huge success of last year’s release of a 70 year old Mortlach under their new ‘Generations’ brand, G&M have released another cask that has been sitting dormant in their warehouse since the days of the second world war.

Perhaps the most astonishing part of both of these releases has been that neither of the whiskies have been described in any way as ‘over the hill’ or ‘too woody’. It’s testament to the absolute vastness of G&M’s stock that they’re able to pull out gems such as these after the best part of a lifetime in Oak.

Distilled on 4th February 1940 (just 3 days before the release of Disney’s Pinocchio – thank you Wikipedia), the whisky was filled into a first-fill sherry butt which has yielded only 100 70cl bottles, and 175 20cl bottles.
