First Winner of the Premium Whisky Advent Calendar Competition!

by Sam Smith     13. November 2013 13:51

WWE wrestling

Winning can be tough. Rugby players sometimes get their teeth knocked out to win. Wrestlers have to dropkick everyone in sight to get a taste of the gold. Chess is just difficult to play, let alone beat someone at it. To other people, like this week’s winner of our Premium Whisky Advent Calendar competition, winning was as easy as buying a delicious Tasting Set and letting the prizes roll in.

Master of Malt win ‘Online Retailer of the Year’ at the World Whiskies Awards 2012

by Ben Ellefsen     2. April 2012 11:44

Well - last week was quite a week. Further to staying up unfeasibly late on Tuesday drinking Hot chocolate and Lemonade into the wee hours with the lovely folk at Glenfarclas and Pol Roger, I was invited to judge the World Whiskies Awards on the Wednesday evening (an amazing showing all round, the results of which can be found here). .

Following that, I was up bright and early (ish) to present at the World Whiskies Conference on Thursday afternoon (I didn’t say any rude words during the course of my speech. I am proud of this).

After the world whiskies conference was the World Whiskies Awards, whereupon myself and another couple of directors were left at a table, unsupervised by any kind of grown-ups, in the presence of a bottle of Kavalan Solist, and a Batch 30 bottle of Aberlour a’Bunadh. More...

New Product entitled… erm… “Brown Drink”

by Ben Ellefsen     3. August 2011 15:43

So – we’ve been doing our Drinks by the Dram whisky sample service for almost a year now, and in that time have decanted ‘loads’ of 700ml bottles into 30ml samples.

700 divided by 30 is 690, so even if one is slightly generous with the 30ml measure, there’s still going to be a little drop or two left over.

My original plan (and I thought it was a darned good one) was to save all of this up, and make some awesome cocktails at the staff Christmas party, or maybe do something at the directors’ joint birthday party, but it turns out that “a little drop or two” multiplied by “loads” is about 37 full-sized bottles-worth.

Even we aren’t that thirsty. More...

Kilchoman Summer 2010 Release

by Michael Orson     24. September 2010 13:42
Kilchoman Summer 2010 Release

Kilchoman’s Summer 2010 release is in at last! This sprightly 3 year old was matured entirely in fresh bourbon barrels (which is a first for Kilchoman; the previous trio were all at least partially matured in sherry).

We’ve already reviewed the Autumn 2009 Release and Spring 2010 Release and we loved them both, so we’ve got high expectations for this one.

Here are our thoughts… More...

Buy a sample of the Glenfarclas 40 Year Old Scottish Classic

by Michael Orson     14. July 2010 14:10
Glenfarclas 40 Year Old Scottish Classic

Glenfarclas added a 40 year old to their core range this year. A bold move like this is testament to Glenfarclas’ incredible stocks, and most distilleries would struggle to maintain production of a core range 40 year old bottling.

It was set apart from the year’s other high end releases by two factors. One was quality; we’ve sung its praises before so we won’t go into too much detail, but suffice to say it’s a stunner! The second factor was price; most whiskies in this age range (particularly from stalwart premium distilleries like Glenfarclas) retail at a minimum of a grand. Amazingly, you can find Glenfarclas 40 at just £289 (from us of course!). More...

Bourbon and American Whiskey

by Michael Orson     1. July 2010 09:45

 Small Batch Bourbon

The American whiskey fraternity is enjoying the burgeoning success and ever-increasing popularity of a thing called craft-distilling. There’s always been something intrinsically exciting that surrounds artisan food and drink, and whiskey is no exception. In fact, the spirits industry is abuzz with new releases of wonderfully packaged and gloriously quaint bourbons and other American whiskeys and we thought we’d throw in our two cents. You see, whiskey really is a spirit of provenance and it requires great attention to detail. You simply can’t go about mass-producing the stuff without due care and diligence, and that’s exactly what the new breed of craft distillers are tapping into, and they’re creating some of America’s best exports. Renegade Rum

by Michael Orson     21. June 2010 14:06

 Renegade Rum Tasting

Cask finishing is rather trendy these days, and it’s becoming a case of the more exotic and unusual the better. Murray McDavid took this to a whole new level with their Renegade Rum range. You see, it’s independently bottled rum with a difference; all of the casks are taken to Islay for maturation at the Bruichladdich distillery, and (this has got ‘laddie’s prints all over it) the rums are “enhanced” in some pretty extraordinary wine casks. They also earn the packaging prize for their handsomely sand-blasted bottles, replete with metal dog tags! More...
