Feis Ile 2013: Day 6 (Kilchoman) - Kikkoman VS Kilchoman

by Jake Mountain     31. May 2013 22:26

Kilchoman

– He came from the planet of soy.

– The cool guy...

– Kikkoman!

...but who's this foreigner disrupting the established order of things? Kilcho–man?! I guess we’ll just have to settle this the Harry Hill way...

Feis Ile 2013: Day 5 (Bowmore) - Message in Bottle Winners & Flaming Bows

by Jake Mountain     30. May 2013 19:25

Bart back to the future

It seems that everywhere we've gone this week people have been talking about one thing in particular: the mysterious bottles that have washed up on the shores of Islay containing messages written by "Doc" Emmett L. Brown way back in 1859!

This was, as you may know unless you've been living under a rock (you do read all my blogs with avid enthusiasm, right?), part of our third competition for Feis Ile 2013. Everybody who found a bottle was told to meet at the clock tower at Laphroaig distillery at 12 noon on Wednesday 29th May 2013 - their prize for doing so was a full bottle of That Boutique-y Whisky Company's brand new Caol Ila (worth £54.95) AND the chance to feature on our next cultish comic book-style label!

Feis Ile 2013: Day 3 (Caol Ila) - Caol-Itos, Way

by Jake Mountain     28. May 2013 13:17

Monopoly Islay

The day ended with a game of Islay-opoly where three people landed on Caol Ila at the same time at one point (apt).

That morning we had headed over to Port Askaig, to that very distillery, to continue the search for our lost dog Peaty...

Have you seen him?

Feis Ile 2013: Day 1 (Lagavulin) - Master of Malt Mill

by Jake Mountain     26. May 2013 10:59

Malt Mill distillery

Saturday 25th May 2013 was Lagavulin Day at the Fèis Ìle but more importantly it was the day that the Master of Malt team ‘uncovered’ a number of priceless bottles of Malt Mill new-make spirit.* It was previously believed that only one bottle, from the final filling, was crudely preserved for posterity when this near mythical distillery closed its doors in 1962. Extraordinarily, we now know that a further four bottles have survived from the second-to-last right down to the to the fifth-to-last fillings.** A spokesperson has said that it is “unlikely” that any further bottles are still out there.

Feis Ile 2013: Islay Bound

by Jake Mountain     25. May 2013 15:41

Ferry to Islay

Fèis Ìle 2013. Here. We. Come.

We set off for the Islay whisky festival on Thursday morning with Benedict and myself in one car, Cat and Monsieur Vachon in the Malt Mobile and a rendezvous set for that evening in Edinburgh, our port of call for the night. Successfully avoiding Ben’s extensive heavy metal collection, we were free to discuss vital musical questions such as “Exactly how many years have the ladies loved cool James for now?”. Vital, pressing questions.

Talisker Port Ruighe: The Pride of Portree

by Jake Mountain     15. May 2013 13:12

Portree on the Isle of Skye

Hot on the heels of Talisker Storm comes another no age statement whisky from the very same distillery: Talisker Port Ruighe.

So, what’s the story with Port Ruighe? Wouldn’t you like to know? Well, it’s pronounced Portree, as in the largest town on the Isle of Skye, with ‘Port Ruighe’ being an old Gaelic spelling. The town is based around a large natural harbour, which has been key for business and trade for centuries and latterly has featured some of them there brightly coloured buildings made infamous by a certain children’s television programme. The other thing you need to know is that they have their own top flight (see what I did there) Quidditch team, the Prides, that compete in the British and Irish Quidditch League.

Spirit of Hven: Swedish Whisky, Vodka, and Gin

by Michael Vachon     14. May 2013 10:48

Spirit of Hven range of products

Rolling on with our recent trend of bringing new brands to the UK market (and beyond), we are pleased to introduce you to the Spirits of Hven. A Swedish whisky distillery which produces gin and vodka in a most nontraditional way (most gin does not take 2 years to produce), Hven is located on a tiny island that was home to astronomer Tycho Brahe in the 16th Century.

When I imagined the journey to an island off the coast of Sweden in early March, I pictured snow, ice, and travelling in a boat exactly like like the one below.

The Glenlivet Alpha: It's Started!

by Jake Mountain     8. May 2013 10:00

The Glenlivet Alpha

You may have already heard the exciting news that The Glenlivet have launched a brand new expression without revealing any tasting notes or cask details – even the bottle is blacked out so that you can’t see the whisky until you first pour some out into your chosen glass! It’s a totally blind release, the first of its kind and it will take a chap of steel to unravel its mysteries.

The Glenlivet Alpha is available now from Master of Malt, and with only 3,350 available worldwide (600 in the UK), make sure to grab one before it’s too late – we expect these to sell at a colossal velocity. Once you have your bottle you can begin The Glenlivet’s interactive sensory journey to discover its secrets, testing yourself or learning more about Single Malt Scotch Whisky along the way.

Winner of the Caption Contest!

by Master of Malt     23. April 2013 11:10

Highlander and Clynelish bottle

After poring over the entries from our recent caption competition, wherein the winner was promised a full bottle of Clynelish whisky from That Boutique-y Whisky Company, we were a bit stumped (or chimped).

We struggled to choose just one entry; there were so many outrageous images to choose from (some more so than others)! We finally caved and decided that though there can only be one champion, there were a few entries that deserved honourable mentions (and drams). Still, there can only be one, and there was one that was truly more evolved (wink!) than the rest.

So, without further ado...

Maltstock 2012: A Dutch Odyssey with its own (Highland Park) Whisky

by Cat Spencer     22. April 2013 14:45

Maltstock 2012 Tasting Glass

Just before we officially launched ‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ in the UK (and beyond), we packed up the Mini Malt Mobile (aka Ben's car, complete with boxes upon boxes of Scotch whisky, suitcases, and a ukulele), piled in, and took to the motorways and Channel to get to Maltstock, a yearly whisky festival in the Netherlands.

Pitched as "the relaxed whisky weekend" it is—indeed—"relaxing". Akin to a summer camp for whisky enthusiasts, the weekend is packed with music, bonfires, whisky masterclasses, whisky-themed games, a whisky quiz, and a veritable overdose (if that can be said) of food and friends. This was our third year in attendance, and believe me, it lives up to the hype. By the end, we were all a bit like newborn fawns: blinking in the sun and staggering gingerly about the place. We've got a flock of photos below to give you, dear reader, a taste of some of the activities to be had. A picture is worth a thousand words, they say…
