Master of Cocktails - The Magic Number

by Ben Ellefsen     8. December 2014 11:53

Master of Cocktails The Magic Number

Greetings all. Anyone fancy a drink?

We're making a cocktail using Champagne for this week's #MasterofCocktails - it's The Magic Number recipe. It's not a 'Champagne cocktail', as that's a thing in its own right. This is a variation on a recipe I nicked from the Kamm & Sons website. Variation only in quantities, not ingredients. It's a great showcase for the Kamm & Sons British Aperitif - which is sort of bittersweet. Closest comparison would probably be Campari.

Anywhoo - this really is a very easy-to-make drink, and is a break from the Christmas tradition of 'all the Champagne'.

Whisky Santa's Whisky Advent Day 8: Dalmore 15 Year Old

by Whisky Santa     8. December 2014 00:00

Dalmore 15 Year Old

Back in the twelfth century I inspired the giving of tangerines in Christmas stockings you know, something that's remained popular right through to this day. More recently, chocolate oranges been given too - nom nom nom! As I'm also rather partial to a bit of Christmas cake over the festive season, you can probably tell where all this has been heading. That's right: Day 8 of Whisky Advent 2014, and the delicious dram of Scotch that lies behind the eighth window of our Whisky Advent Calendars!

Highland single malt matured in Matusalem, Apostoles and Amoroso Sherry casks, 'tis the season for The Dalmore 15 Year Old.

Whisky Santa's Whisky Advent Day 7: Glenfarclas 10 Year Old

by Whisky Santa     7. December 2014 00:00

Glenfarclas 10 Year Old

Excited to peek behind the seventh window of the Whisky Advent Calendar? Well now's the time, as it's Day 7! Behind that little window lies a classic Sherried expression from a family-owned independent Scottish distillery - it's a dram of Glenfarclas 10 Year Old!

Six generations of the Grant family have helped run the distillery, and next year marks the 150th anniversary of John Grant buying Glenfarclas back in 1865. #WhiskySanta Towers has been family-owned for many decades too you know, but the Grant family have managed it all without omniscience and flying reindeer. Bloody impressive! Not to say I'm a slouch mind, just watch me move on the 24th!

Whisky Santa's Whisky Advent Day 6: Spirit of Hven Single Malt

by Whisky Santa     6. December 2014 00:00

Spirit of Hven Single Malt

It's Day 6 already! How time flies when you're having fun! That said, time is irrelevant to omniscient supernatural beings such as myself. I've seen the fall of empires and the birth of new stars in the sky...

Speaking of stars, behind the sixth window of your Whisky Advent Calendars, you'll find a dram of Swedish single malt from the Spirit of Hven distillery, named after Merak, a star in the Ursa Major constellation. It's the second release in their spectacular 'Seven Stars' series of whiskies. It's just the ticket if you're keen for a winter warmer, which you may be looking for if you visit the tiny craft distillery on the island of Hven in the Öresund strait at this time of year!

Whisky Santa's Whisky Advent Day 5: Bowmore 12 Year Old

by Whisky Santa     5. December 2014 00:00

Bowmore 12 Year Old

Four delicious days down, and on 5th December the Whisky Advent Calendar giveth single malt from Bogh Mòr! Bowmore distillery's 12 year old single malt to be precise.

They say that the devil last visited Bowmore in 1837, and that the people of the town of Bowmore scared him off. I'm generally more bothered by the Grinch though personally. If you happen to see him about, make sure you tell him to do one too, won't you? He'll take a hint one of these days. Other than that, I simply encourage you to sit back and enjoy your dram of delicious peated Scotch from Islay.

Chip Tate to set up New Distillery after leaving Balcones

by Jake Mountain     4. December 2014 12:09

Chip Tate & Co Distillery Balcones

Balcones' founder and builder Chip Tate and the venture capitalist group that invested in the Texan craft distillers back in February 2013 reached an impasse with regards to working together some time ago, and have finally parted company.

Having ended up in court in August of this year following disagreements that stemmed from the distillery expansion the investors were brought in to facilitate, a number of allegations were made and Chip was temporarily suspended. In November, however, Judge Jim Meyer of Waco’s 170th State District Court ruled that the board's actions taken without Chip in the intervening months were invalid, forcing them back to the negotiating table.

Whisky Santa's Whisky Advent Day 4: Jura 16 Year Old

by Whisky Santa     4. December 2014 00:00

Isle of Jura 16 Year Old Diurachs' Own

It's Day 4, and what do we have here? A single malt Scotch whisky? Yes, from the "extremely unget-at-able" Isle of Jura, as I once heard young George Orwell describe it.

It's considerably easier to 'get-at' if you have flying reindeer of course, and I do rather enjoy travelling to the island on business every Christmas Eve. Less ice than at home, but many more deer! Mrs Claus and I are only outnumbered 9:2 (used to be 4:1 before we adopted that ruddy schnozzled fellow) by our four-legged antlered friends, whilst the Diurach of Jura are outnumbered 30:1 by the island's red deer!

Hence why Jura or 'Diùra' literally means 'deer island'. This dram, meanwhile, spent 14 years in American white oak casks and two years in ex-Amoroso Oloroso Sherry casks, and is said to be the whisky of choice for the Diurach themselves...

Whisky Santa's Whisky Advent Day 3: Evan Williams Single Barrel

by Whisky Santa     3. December 2014 00:00

Evan Williams Single Barrel

Time to open the third window of our Whisky Advent Calendars and see what surprise lies behind it... why I think this is a bourbon... Yes, it's Evan Williams Single Barrel Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey!

They've been producing Evan Williams at family-owned Heaven Hill since 1959 you know, and it's named after the chap who was purportedly Kentucky's first ever commercial distiller. I remember young Evan very well, of course, but as an omniscient supernatural being I'm not allowed to clear up these little historical facts for you I'm afraid. Rules is rules. Besides, there's some delicious bourbon to taste...

Whisky Santa's Whisky Advent Day 2: Teeling Small Batch

by Whisky Santa     2. December 2014 09:00

Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey

The second day of Whisky Advent is upon us already and what's behind the second window of the Whisky Advent Calendar?... Why it's Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey!

The Teeling family were of course the good folk behind the independent Cooley distillery (creating the excellent Connemara Peated single malt and Greenore single grain, for example) before it was eventually bought by Beam. Fortunately, they weren't away for long and soon released Teeling Small Batch, a blend of selected casks of Irish malt and grain, finished for six months in ex-Flor de Caña Rum casks! In early 2015 they'll have a shiny new distillery opening in the heart of Dublin too, one of many new projects on the island.

Master of Cocktails - Pedro Grant goes to New Orleans

by Ben Ellefsen     1. December 2014 09:27

Master of Cocktails Pedro Grant Goes To New Orleans

Right then folks. Time for another #MasterofCocktails! This week's involves setting things on fire, which is always fun.

We're going to be making a Christmassy twist on a Sazerac recipe using Balvenie 15yo Single Barrel and PX Sherry. If anyone feels like complaining about the fact that we're using a good single malt in a cocktail, can I suggest you jog on and complain to the Daily Mail - they'll probably have a story to print about it being responsible for immigration. Or something.
