I Guess We Can’t Win Them All... Food & Travel Magazine Reader Awards

by Jake Mountain     4. September 2013 10:40

Food and Travel Magazine Awards 2013

The surroundings were familiar. Yes, it was indeed another swanky awards do *yawn*, just pass us the gongs and we’ll be on our way, I suppose. Except this time, things didn’t pan out quite as you may imagine...

On the evening in question, we were attending the Food & Travel Magazine 2013 Reader Awards Gala Dinner at The Savoy. We had been nominated for the Specialist Retailer of the Year award. Very nice indeed. It was surely in the bag, I mean, they wouldn’t have invited us to the dinner if it wasn’t in the bag… right?

[I should probably point out at this stage that we are only joking! We're obviously flattered to have been nominated by such a prestigious publication.]

Sloe Gin from Professor Cornelius Ampleforth!

by Jake Mountain     20. August 2013 15:48

Professor Cornelius Ampleforth Sloe Gin

Back in 2012 Professor Cornelius Ampleforth released his own unique version of the classic that is Sloe Gin, and he saw that it was good. Very good. So good, in fact, that everybody bought some... and then they bought some more for good measure. Then there wasn’t any left…. until now!

Introducing: Professor Cornelius Ampleforth’s Sloe Gin 2013! *cue rapturous, hearty applause*

One of the problems the Professor faced last year was securing sufficient quantities of high quality Sloe Berries in order to keep up with demand. (After all, almost half a pound of Sloes are used in the production of each and every bottle!) Excitingly though, he now seems to have a handle on it now.

New Products - Batshit Mental Ideas!

Batman in asylum

Some said that Galileo Galilei was crazy when he claimed to have evidence of a heliocentric solar system.

Some even said that Robert Matthew Van Winkle had lost his marbles when he decided to try his hand at being a white rapper.

These days we of course know that the Earth revolves around the Sun and that Vanilla Ice’s To the Extreme became the fastest selling hip-hop album of all time, but it still takes a brave soul to swim against the tide like some kind of beautiful maverick.

Ardbeg TracTOUR!

Ardbeg Tractour

Ever been stuck behind a tractor on a narrow road on Islay? Or anywhere else for that matter? Ardbeg, it seems, have created the perfect solution...

With a little help from automobile whizz extraordinaire Paul Burnham, Ardbeg have succeeded in turning a reliable farmer’s best friend (the sort of indestructible behemoth you could leave rusting in a field for a decade and it would still start up first time) into a shiny chrome-clad hot rod! In fact, as you can see in the video below, their 1950s Massey Ferguson tractor can now show Formula 1 cars from the following decade who's boss!

Hudson Whiskey

Hudson Whiskey Baby Bourbon

The Hudson Whiskey range boasts the first legally distilled and aged grain spirits produced in New York since Prohibition! Fantastic in itself, Tuthilltown Spirits' craft distillery (yep, another one – we love 'em!) charm certainly runs deeper than this single fact, with its very existence oweing much to fate and circumstance. Its success however is owed only to hard work and the high quality of what they have managed to create in the past few years.

When Ralph Erenzo bought Tuthilltown Gristmill and the 35 acres that surrounded it, distilling was far from the professional climber’s thoughts. Originally, he had dreamt of creating the perfect climber’s paradise: a ranch that would act as a base camp for those wishing to scale the cliffs at nearby Shawangunk Ridge.

Oops!... We did it again: IWSC Results (International Wine & Spirits Competition)

by Jake Mountain     26. July 2013 17:21

Master of Malt 30 Year Old Speyside IWSC 2013 Tasting

Another week, another set of awards results announced! This time from the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC), “the premier competition of its kind in the world”. (I know, I know, they can’t all be the best - and they do indeed have similar sounding names – but this is another one of the really, really BIG competitions. Important stuff.)

As well as the usual Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, there are also Gold Outstanding and Silver Outstanding Medals at the IWSC, with a huge score of 90-100 out of 100 required for a Gold Medal and Gold Outstanding Medals only being awarded at the judges’ discretion! Welcome to big school!

Glenfarclas & Hine 1953 - The Auld Alliance

by Jake Mountain     19. July 2013 16:17

glenfarclas and hine 1953

Back at the end of May, just before all the busyness and rushing about, Ben and I attended a very special event, which I was no doubt supposed to write about back then. Drawing attention to the fact that I didn’t is probably a terrible decision, but the people must still know, damn it!

The time has come for you to learn all about this: Glenfarclas & Hine 1953 – Auld Alliance.

Woah boy.

isc trophy awards dinner 2013

Medals are great, we love receiving medals for our delicious whiskies and spirits (oh, how we love it!) – but do you know what’s even better than medals? Trophies! Great hunking trophies that could be wielded to devastating effect should the urge take you!

With that in mind, you can imagine the degree to which we all had our fingers, toes and eyes crossed as we sent five of our finest off to the International Spirits Challenge Awards Dinner (where them there trophies are announced!)...

Dramboree: A Whisky Weekend in Scotland! (Part 2)

by Jake Mountain     11. July 2013 19:03

dramboree glass whisky weekend 2013

Following a fine Friday evening at Dramboree (see Part 1 of my Executive report), an entire day of whisky fun still lay ahead! I give you... Part Deux.

After a hearty breakfast we set off for Aberfeldy distillery, our first port of call with tastings from Springbank’s Melanie Stranger and the guys from Whisky Lounge to look forward to later on (not to mention that Whisky Table!) all organised by our fantastic hosts Jonny McMillan and Jason B. Standing. There would also be a barbecue courtesy of Master of Malt (that’s us!).

Plenty to look forward to then as we set off on a short stroll down to the home of Dewar’s blend and Aberfeldy single malt Scotch whisky.
